4-yr-old died from vaccination

DesertMom's picture

I just read an article on a blog about a 4-yr-old who died in his pediatrician's office as a result of a routine vaccination. With all of the concerns out there about immunizations and a possible relationship to autism, I'm wondering if there are moms out there who are truly concerned about this issue. Do you choose not to vaccinate your children or hold you breath at all when they are vaccinated?

I vacinnate my children but

BoysRHvn's picture

I vacinnate my children but never "bundle" the vaccinations. I just go in every month or so so that my children are not too behind on the schedule. The one I feel is so important is the Prevnar shot. This is not even given until starting at 2 months. Unfortunately, my 3 week old child had an undiagnosed heart condition and contracted bacterial meningitis (which Prevanar protects agianst). I vaccinate and hold my breath!

I have my daughter on a

I have my daughter on a selective vaccine schedule. I don't believe that children should be given 3 or 4 shots a time. I also don't believe that children need all of the vaccine's "they" say they need. More than half of the mothers/fathers just believe and trust their child's pediatrician and get the shots. How many actually ask meaningful questions, or even read the pamphlet they give you? Most of the time that is a no. (I'm not saying you or any one else on here does that and I am not judging) I believe parents need to be doing more research then just going with what the pediatrician says. I strongly suggest reading The Vaccine Book by Dr. Robert Sears. He is very informative and give lots of good points. My daughter is almost 3 and has been on the selective vaccine schedule and she is perfectly fine. It really hurts to read these stories related to vaccines.

I am one of those parents

I am one of those parents who have just trusted in our pediatrician. But after reading this post I will definetely read the book. I almost cry everytime she gets vaccainated. It is so scary being a parent.

Optimist's picture

I started limiting the number of vaccines given at one time after my 3 yr old son had a seizure, in the doctor's office, 2 minutes after receiving vaccines (+ flu) at his well check. Granted, my son has since been diagnosed with a seizure disorder, so he probably had a lower threshold, but it was certainly scary and coincedental timing. Yet, I will continue to vaccinate them.

Do you have any additional

me's picture

Do you have any additional information about this? What immunizations did the child receive? Did the child have an unknown medical aliment? Was the child on an alternative vaccine schedule or a regular schedule?

Just curious....i too hate when my daughter has to be vaccinated and yes, i hold my breath. I think i hold my breath for a couple of reason though....1 - don't like to see her hurting and 2 - From all the literature and research i do read regarding vaccines.

Any additional information would be nice.

I'm so sorry -- I can't find

DesertMom's picture

I'm so sorry -- I can't find it now. I was reading through several blogs and just don't remember which one it was. It may have been on the Blogher site, but not sure. Sorry about that! But, after researching, now I'm amazed at how many articles there are about kids who've died after immunizations. This probably is media hype, but still, it's a little scary....

I hold my breath at the

susan_hampton's picture

I hold my breath at the thought that parents DON'T vaccinate their children against preventable childhood diseases. Anecdotal evidence of actual harm from vaccinations and rare tragic cases of death that get a lot of media attention frighten parents into thinking that vaccinations are inherently dangerous. This is also a tragedy. Vaccinations are NOT going to put the vast majority of children at risk.

I'm with you, Susan.

Some of you younger Moms may not have been around when vaccinations weren't "mandatory", and measles, mumps, and rubella outbreaks occurred on a regular basis. All of these diseases can lead to severe complications, they're very contagious, and they cause extreme discomfort to the child.

Houses got put under quarantine. Pregnant women had to remove themselves. After everyone was well again, almost everything in the house had to be disinfected or thrown out.

I do think that, whenever possible, parents should schedule an appointment with their child's pediatrician, who knows the child's history, rather than go to clinics for shots. The pedi is in a much better position to know if a vaccine is likely to cause a reaction in each child's case.

I'm totally with you guys on

mamalemur's picture

I'm totally with you guys on this! Parents - please vaccinate your children. If you have any concerns about side effects, talk to your family doctor, or even your local public health clinic.
Do you remember the measles outbreak a few months ago? These diseases can and do kill. Please protect your children, (and mine!) by having them vaccinated, and according to schedule.

Yes, perspective....infants

Optimist's picture

Yes, perspective....infants die from complications from circumcision too, but that doesn't strike the same fear chord, because people already have an emotional tie to the procedure. If those stories don't dissaude you, then horror stories about vaccinations shouldn't either.

I agree with Susan. I

I agree with Susan. I actually did do a lot of research regarding vaccinations while pregnant with my son, and opted to go ahead and have him vaccinated, and on schedule. Yes, I hold my breath; there are unknowns out there in any given situation. I can't well battle the unknowns, but I can battle the knows, in this case being potentially serious/fatal childhood illnesses.

It was my son's doc that told us he couldn't take the "live" vaccines, because he would get the illness instead, due to a rare immune system issue. the doc that diagnosed him didn't tell us this, his regular pediatrician did. Make sure your doc knows all about your kids. Trust your doctors, or get new ones that you do trust.

LongWayHome's picture

We vaccinate. When I was a child, I had a friend die from tetanus. I'm not sure if it's as deadly in today's world (meaning there might be treatment options available now), but it was a horrible, horrible death for her.

My siblings were raised in a time when many diseases did not have vaccines available. My mother has told stories of the fear she felt as polio epidemics swept through the town she was raising her children in. To me, the risks of not vaccinating outweigh the risks of the vaccine.

I'm not attempting to change anyone's minds. These are just the reasons that I choose to vaccinate. But I ALWAYS encourage everyone to be informed.

I am very concerned. I do believe that it is not in the best interest of the child load a child up before the age of 2 on vaccinations like we do. You may not know whether you child is predisposed to something that the vaccination may effect.. I am so afraid to vaccinate my children that I have not finished any of their shots...

I, too am one of those

JuneSlager's picture

I, too am one of those parents who has always vaccinated my children. With my youngest having asthma, we have also added the annual flu shots into the routine since his allergist strongly suggested we do so. I will say though that on days the kids receive the vaccinations, I am very protective of them and make sure they take it easy and stay out of the sun.

We know someone who vaccinated their infant son and then proceeded to take the young child to the pool for the day and had him out in the heat for several hours. He did have a terrible reaction that they could never determine the specific cause for, but it did seem like it could be related to the vaccination, although I also always felt his activities that day could have also been a contributing factor.

In the end, I think it is very important to vaccinate my children, and I am thankful they have not had any adverse reactions to them in the past, and I will continue to space out their vaccinations and keep them on limited activity for the days they receive them.

Our girls have received all

karilouMomof2's picture

Our girls have received all their shots but now need their booster for chicken pox. We held our breath. I remember with our oldest getting the paperwork on what to look for in case of a reaction. My husband freaked and asked, "why are we doing this?" I just looked at him and it was hard because I had misgivings too and told him it was the right thing to do.

When my oldest was in 1st grade, a couple of siblings (whose parents did not vaccinate them), got the chicken pox. They were out the last MONTH of school. A whole month. I was just amazed and remembered when I was growing up getting the mumps. 2 weeks one side, 2 weeks the other side. I was out a month of school along with my siblings. There was no vaccine back then. I am glad that our medical community has improved these things through vaccines. I feel more confident with things this community has done quite a few years ago verses now with money seeming to be the driving force.

My son is 14months old - he

Seans_Mommy's picture

My son is 14months old - he will never again be vacciniated. He got his 12 month vaccinations on Tuesday May 20th in his arms - 1 in the left no problem for him - 2 in the right that made him scream like I had never heard him scream before, had a high fever on Wednesday May 21st, was very lathargic on Thursday May 22nd - I called the doctor to let him know he had a high fever that I brought down with Tylenol on Wednesday night and he was acting very lathargic - they told me it was a normal reaction from the shots and he was fine. On Friday the 23rd his right arm was in a postion that looked like he was showing his muscles and his right hand was clenched in a fist and shaking. I called the doctor and since we had just switched him over to whole milk they said he was constipated and was trying to push it out and to give him a zapository - so we did. Saturday the 24th we woke up and his arm was behind him and shakinig and wasn't working. He couldn't crawl, stand, walk or anything. We rushed him to the ER - no more calling doctors at this point. They gave him a Cat Scan - it turns out he had a stroke. They rushed him to Phoenix Childrens Hospital where the MRI confirmed the stroke. It left him paralized on his right side. Never again will he get vaccinated.
