Chemical Risk in Baby Products?

karilouMomof2's picture

So I read this article and am thinking now what? So this chemical is found in lots of things, cosmetics, toys, vinyl flooring and medical supplies among other "common" things. It is used to stabilize fragrances and make plastics flexible. Read the article below and you will see. The Federal government has no restrictions, but California does and some countries have restricted some of their use. My question is still "now what?" What will you do? I need to check the labels on our "common" things......

Baby products linked to chemical risk

Associated Press
Feb. 4, 2008 12:00 AM
CHICAGO - Baby shampoos, lotions and powders may expose infants to chemicals that have been linked with possible reproductive problems, a small study suggests.

The chemicals, called phthalates, are found in many ordinary products including cosmetics, toys, vinyl flooring and medical supplies. They are used to stabilize fragrances and make plastics flexible.

In the study, they were found in elevated levels in the urine of babies who'd been recently shampooed, powdered or lotioned with baby products.

Phthalates (pronounced thowl-ates) are under attack by some environmental-advocacy groups, but experts are uncertain what dangers, if any, they might pose.

The federal government doesn't limit their use, although California and some countries have restricted their use.

Animal studies have suggested that phthalates can cause reproductive birth defects and some activists believe they may cause reproductive problems in boys and early puberty in girls.

Did it say which brands of baby products were the problem? I use California Baby, Burts Bees and sometimes Aveeno, so I am curious to see if those were on the list because they are supposed to contain less "junk" than say Johnson and Johnson products.....

Great article - thanks! I

Great article - thanks! I use Johnson and Johnson's Bedtime Bath and Lotion every night on my baby girl - I didn't see phthalates listed on the bottle, but I'm thinking that the ingredients in question might be under a different name. If anyone sees an article about the actual chemicals or even products in question, could you please post the link on here? Thanks!!

For those of you who use

BeGreen's picture

For those of you who use Johnson & Johnson baby products....they do contain harmful chemicals in them. Tide, Cheer, Dreft, Ivory, Lysol products, Simple Green, Colgate, Electrasol, Windex, Clorox Wipes, Neutrogena, Loreal, Olay, Jetdry, Curel, Dove, Fabreeze and the list goes on an on. They all contain chemicals that can cause profound health problems such as: ADD, ADHD, Asthma, Eczema, Cancers, Birth Defects, Infertility etc.

Do you know why your mouth burns/tingles after you brush? It's not because of the minty fresh flavor either. Toothpaste's active ingredient is the same active ingredient as DRANO and TOILET BOWEL cleaner. That is no joke.

Johnson & Johnson Baby products contain a chemical called:
Sodium Hydroxide aka: Lye

Sodium Hydroxide causes 75% of all caustic injury to the esophagus.
Can cause burns in tissues.
Can cause liver and kidney damage, even blindness.
These chemicals that are in everyday products we consume, and clean our homes with are stored in you and your childs fat cells and cause these profund health problems and disorders do to small exposures and lifetime exposure.

Also know that the tin cans that hold food in them such as: soups, fruit, veggies, tomatoes etc. are lined with a hormone in the factory before food is placed in them. This hormone has been proven by UC at Berkley to cause girls to mature way before they should and profound health problems. They never tell you not to cook or eat anything out of aluminum cans/pots or teflon either. The truth is teflon, once it's heated to a certin temp. leaches off in the food, especially if you put your teflon coated pots and pans in the dishwasher. Washing teflon in a dishwasher oxidizes it and makes it easier to cook or even flake off in your food. And the whole freezing and heating of plastics, sometimes it's all too much to hear, but at the same time it's better to know so you can make whatever choice for the better good of your family.
