Chiropractors-tell me about them.

MollyDonnelly's picture

I almost went to a chiropractor years ago, but got scared when everyone started telling me their horror stories. What's your experience with them? Why did you go...if you don't mind me asking!?! How long did you go for?

I have a pinched nerve in my back and it seems to be moving down my back more and more adding vertebrae with each episode. I need to get something done, but I'm afraid!! Help!

I went to one for chronic

I went to one for chronic headaches and had a great experience. but my husband went to the same guy for neck problems and didn't notice a difference. it's worth checking out - and see if your insurance will cover it. ours did up to a certain number of visits.

Just want to share my opinion...I don't like messing with bone alignment. I don't think it's good for you, I don't think you should move the bones and crack them.

Can't Imagine Life without Chiropractic

I feel that bone alignment and/or accupuncture is much better therapy for back/neck/hip pain relief than ingesting synthetic and toxic pharmaceuticals. So yes, if you are in pain, I would highly recommend seeing a chiropractor or accupuncturist. Even if you don't have insurance (or insurance that will cover chiropractic care), most chiropractic adjustments are generally not much more expensive than the going co-pay for insurance. My chiropractor charges $32/visit without insurance, and that price is reduced significantly if you arrange for regular maintenance.

Consider if you went to your family doctor and had to pay a $30 copay. Then, he/she wrights you a prescription from which ever pharmacuetical company at that time has managed to "persuade" him/her that their drug is the best. But of course that drug is brand-name and not likely on your "preferred list" of prescriptions with your insurance and costs you $40-$50 retail for a 30 day supply. You're already at $80-$90, which would get you about 3 chiropractic adjustments. AND without the added dis-benefit of not knowing the long term affects of the drug or messing with your body chemistry by adding toxic chemicals to it.

Be careful when choosing a chiropractor though. There are qwacks out there! Just before finding my current chiropractor, whom I've been seeing bi-weekly for two years now (for chronic back/neck pain) , I went to guy that didn't do any type of spinal examination or x-rays before adjusting my back. I was in a lot more pain going out of there than I was going in! Try to get a referral from someone you know and if you do end up in an office and the doc doesn't do some type of heat sensory exam or x-rays run for the door BEFORE he/she tries to adjust you!

I don't know your location, but if you're in the Baseline/Mill area in Tempe, and would like a good referral, post here and I can highly recommend my chiropractor.

Loved your comment about...he/she wrights you a prescription from which ever pharmacuetical company at that time has managed to "persuade" him/her that their drug is the best...! Don't you think doctors should have to disclose that the drug they're giving you is the latest and greatest given to them by their pharmaceutical rep? A friend of mine went to a doctor and got a script for a drug. The friend had the foresight to ask how many patients this doctor had given the drug to. Her answer...just one, you! She then got mad when he wouldn't take it. I'm sure he got a notation in his chart about being a difficult patient!

It's typical of traditional medical doctors to force their way of thinking on others. If someone chooses not to take their medical advice/prescribed drugs they immidiately cast them as non-followers. Try to tell your PCP (traditional) that you're taking herbal or homeopathic remedies and see what their reaction is. Whatever happened to natural treatment? Ever wonder if Big Pharma is doing everything in their power to lose the history of such treatments, as they can't make a large profit on non-patentable remedies?

Mixed on this - I have tried

Mixed on this - I have tried them and it really did NOT help. I think massage therapy and acupuncture are worth giving a shot....

I have never been to a chiropractor. However, that was on the advice of one of my high school friends who is now a Neurosurgeon. He has told me how in his industry there are patients who end up seeing neurosurgeons as a result of their unfortunate situations due to having seen a chiropractor. In many cases some of the situations even require surgery to fix. I am not a doctor so cannot advise you, but I'd do my research (I'm sure there are many articles/information on the internet) and find out success and unsuccessful procedures that can happen by seeing a chiropractor. Me personally, I don't let anyone mess with my back, neck, head - especially if their treatments end up in one hearing popping sounds.
