They say that the H3N2 virus is the worst flu yet. Why don't we have a shot for this one yet? It seems like we scramble at the last min to get flu shots out to people but I hear it's always for the wrong strain. I don't understand. This worries me. Anyone else?

NPR did a great story on why
NPR did a great story on why we are always short of vaccines. There are only two companies in the country that make fku vaccines, because there is no profit in it. When one company was shut down last year (or the year before?) due to contamination, the Presidient vowed to subsidize pharmacetical companies to make sure that it never happened again....Don't know the status on that!
I don't know much about this
I don't know much about this what would subsidizing pharmacetical companies mean for the companies? I guess it would help us? But it would hurt their profits so that's why it hasn't been done yet?

The flu vaccine is
The flu vaccine is manufactured every year for the following year, based on what they expect the strains of flu to be. This year they missed the mark, and it takes too long to "grow" the vaccine to produce more supply in time to be helpful for the populations at most risk. (Vaccines are manufactured from killed live virus). It can also take several weeks for the vaccine to be effective once you have the shot. If you got a flu shot this past season and still got the flu (like me and my daughter did) chances are you probably got a much milder case of flue, and you would be very unlikely to die from complications. By getting a flu shot every year, you also retain some protection against previous flu strains.
