Ok, so I posted yesterday that I was shocked to find out that nail polish was so toxic and I had painted my daughters toes the week before. I'm sure there are many products like this. If you know of one that is toxic or dangerous will you share it???? I know household toxins are the worst and our children are especially vulnerable to these.
So if you know of something please share it...
I know that if you open a dishwasher while in cycle the fumes are deadly to children and can cancer in adults. The second you open it while it's in cycle you release these deadly fumes into your house. I am guilty of this to just add one more glass or a forgotten plate. I think to myself if I hold my breath and not breath in right when I am putting the dish in then it will be ok.. I have since stopped...
Oh, and I know air fresheners are very dangerous also.

The EPA has stated that
The EPA has stated that every household in American, on municipally treated water, has an elevated level of chloroform gas in the air (which increases the chloroform that escapes with the puff of steam when the dishwasher door opens.)Specifically from showering, washing dishes, washing clothes, and flushing toilets. Chloroform is a byproduct in chlorine water which is what is harmful when inhaling the steam from dishwashers.
Oh my gosh! I'm guilty of
Oh my gosh! I'm guilty of opening the dishwasher after it has started to add a last dish all the time! Guess I won't be doing that anymore. Thanks so much for the info.

Same! I just did this last night in fact. No more of that.
Shampoos, soaps and sun
Shampoos, soaps and sun screens can be some of the worst topically applied items in your home. I have swtiched all of my son's products to California Baby products for this reason. I hear Method brand is also good and easier to come by at Target. I am in the process of replacing my husband and my toiletries and other harmful household products are they run out. I just switched to Seventh Generation household cleaner, glass cleaner and dishing washing liquid. Scary stuff!
Good stuff to know. I never
Good stuff to know. I never open the dishwasher during its cycle...however yesterday was the first time I did so (cause I needed a fork)...during the steaming (drying) session. Great! Well, at least now we know. Thanks for sharing!

I had no idea about the
I had no idea about the dishwasher!! That is crazy!! Thanks for the heads up.
Stuff that I know of?
Those Mr. Clean get the black marks off of the wall scrubber things have a base in it. Bases are just as bad as acids. If used on skin it will cause burning. (Learned from email)
To eliminate battery acid from skin (changing out an old battery) neutralize with baking soda compound with water. This will put the burn out. (From experience)
If your car overheats NEVER take the radiator cap off after you have driven your car need to wait until the car is completely cool. (Dispite what your car manual says when you overheat do NOT add water to a radiator while it's warm, and do not take the cap off) (Personal experience)
Heating up bottles in the microwave dispite what may have been heard eliminates the beneficial nutrients out of the milk which is why a bowl of hot water works best.
Other than that I have pretty much nothing. Thank you for the heads up though. I had NO idea.

Is the dishwasher thing true
Is the dishwasher thing true for all types of soap?
I would assume it would not be true for the more natural-based products? e.g., Caldrea, stuff from whole foods, etc.

Is it the water, not the soap, that makes the dishwasher fumes so toxic?

I believe it's the water. I
I believe it's the water. I just saw a news piece that was an expose on water in some Scottsdale areas that had higher than normal levels of chloroform in it.
Residents hadn't been informed and they wanted to know why the problem hadn't been addressed.
It's the water not the soap.
It's the water not the soap.
Who really cares about this?
Who really cares about this? We are all alive to talk about the dangers of opening the dishwasher. Give me a break! Life has its dangers. Deal with it! (Five of us members were talking about this off line so this represents several opinions!)
Mom of teenage boys!
I don't know about the rest
I don't know about the rest of you, but I like to know if I can make small changes that make a big difference in the amount of toxic material my family comes in contact with. Saying life has it's dangers just deal with it definitely isn't my motto, especially when it's something I have the control over to change. Thanks to all the moms for your input and wisdom as always.
Well said Jacksmommy!!! I
Well said Jacksmommy!!! I think it would be tragic if we didn't pay attention to what we have control over so keep our family healthy. It shows how much we care. I've had family members that have fought things like cancer and if I can lesson the chance that someone in my house get something awful like this I will do everything in my power to do so. It's ridiculous to say life has it's dangers and not do what you can and what is within your power to keep your family healthy. These are great tips! Thanks!

You might be a little off
You might be a little off base about the dishwasher. What's happening when the water comes into contact with the detergent is that it's activating the chlorine that's in it. (The detergent, not the water). Chlorine (same as clorox) in a vapor form can cause eye and throat irriatation, but it's not as toxic as say - mixing comet and ammonia when cleaning your bathroom. That releases toxic Chlorine GAS - which can kill you.
Did you guys hear about the guy who was mixing pool chemicals and caused an explosion this week?
Just be very careful when using any cleaning product. Follow all directions on packaging - and never ever mix chemicals. That includes not putting bleach in your dishwater. I know a lot of moms do this - my mom used to. So now instead of mixing - she'll wash, rinse, and then stick them in bleach water for a second or two. Much safer!
