Anyone know of any support groups for child with emotional disablilties?

Hello! I am trying to see if there is any groups for mothers\families who have a child who has been labelled as "special needs w\emotional disablilites". My son is a well rounded 8 yr old.. but due to some abuse by my ex and his biological father inflicted on me and our children he can tend to get frustrated or cry when he gets upset, and for the most part he has done exceptionally well in the school program along with his I.E.P but we moved from his old school district (mesa) to Florence school district and their program is in my opinion for lack of a better word "prison like" and completely horrible, I am fighting to get him back into his old program, but in the meantime I am looking to see if any support groups exist for this kinda thing to help me in giving me some much needed support, or ideas on how to help my son. Any help would be appreciated!

i don't really, but the one thought that can to mind was your employer.

Not sure if you are a working mom or not, but some employers offer assistance with counselors - perhaps they can point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

You mention how well he did

You mention how well he did in his other school. I would contact them and ask for guidance while you try and sort this out. Hopefully something can be done while you fight to get him back into his old program. I wonder if a search engine, like google, could also put you in contact with a support group via the internet or better, a group close to you. Good luck while this gets worked out.

I don't have any advice but

I don't have any advice but wanted to wish you well on your search. I'm sure it must be hard to see your son struggle. I agree with pp's suggestions, as sometimes work offers counseling programs or his previous school. Best wishes!

If you are looking for

If you are looking for support, try Raising Special Kids. They are based out of Phoenix (phone #: 602-242-4366). I know they have been helpful for many parents. Also, I would try to be in constant contact with his current teachers and express to them what seemed to work at his other school. IEPs are individualized plans and programs are not suppose to be "one size fits all". I hope this helps. Good luck.

** Got the call today that they were able to get my son back into his old program! We are so very excited! ** And the reason I was asking about a support group is because I was curious to see if other families were going through some of the challenges I was. I thought it could be good for me and my son if I could find one and after looking online and asking around it seems as if there isn't. Been thinking I might create one myself. I mean I know the general idea with dealing with a child with emotional disabilites is not a positive one, I would love to help change that percetive. My son is great, everyone loves him and I am sure he isn't the only child out there like that.
