Empowering our children

ChalkTalk's picture

Empowering Our Children will explore caregiving, addiction in adolescents, sexuality and special education and other issues in upcoming weeks. The show is broadcast at 2 p.m. Saturdays on KXAM1310 a.m.

Scottsdale mom of three Rhonda Cerny produces the show. Cerny used her marketing background to create a weekly educational, interactive radio program, Empowering Our Children. The non-profit program, which receives funding from Los Padres Bank and community donations, provides information about the behavioral, emotional, social and neurological difficulties that children currently face.

For the past two years, the radio program has provided education and advice to parents of children and adolescents who are affected by behavioral, emotional, neurological or social disabilities.

Host of the program is psychologist Stephen Blum, who interviews child-mental-health experts from across the country. Together, he and Cerny help listeners better understand the nature, causes and treatment of these disabilities.

Blum specializes in child and adolescent behavior disorders, anxiety disorders and chronic-pain conditions, and has practiced in Kansas City, Kan., and Topeka for the past 25 years.

The schedule includes: Tuesday, 4/29 caregivers; May 6, addiction in adolescents; May 13, sexuality in adolescent relationships; May 20, special education and home schooling; and May 27, parenting autistic children.
