Garage Sale in Summer?

caret's picture

I am thinking about having a garage sale but I wonder if anyone goes to them in July?

Do you go to garage sales in the summer or should I wait until fall?

I am anti clutter so the thought of all that stuff piling up for a few more months gets me but I am wondering if it is worth the effort in the middle of July.

We did a garage sale in the summer, we just made sure we were up and running in the morning by 6 or 6:30 and we did very well. We did a two day sale on Friday and Saturday from 6 am until about 11 or 11:30, made a couple hundred bucks. We had a few bottled waters for people and had plugged fans in the garage as well, that way if people needed a little cool down they could get it, plus it helped us stay cool as well.

I go to garage sales in the summer, I just make sure it's early in the morning so it is not too hot. The free water and fans is a great idea!

I will always stop at garage

I will always stop at garage sales! Start it early in the morning but I think you will be successful. Remember some people's hobbies are garage saleing! You should be fine.

I think garage sales are a big hit no matter what season it is. It's like a sport for people who go to them.

sure, fine, whatever

Garage sales in the summer are fun...you just have to close shop around 11 am. And if you advertise make sure you get up early for those early birds!! They arrive at 5 or 6.

The heat is probably more of

The heat is probably more of an issue for you, sitting out there for 4 hours, than for someone who drives around in an air conditioned car and stands in your driveway for 10 minutes!

That said, people are less likely to linger (and find a 2nd or 3rd item) when the heat is oppressive. Therefore, if you have a patio table with an umbrella, display things under the umbrella. Or, consider parking your own car out in the hot sun and displaying some items in the shade of your garage. Anything you can do like that will encourage people to view everything you have to offer.

Good luck!

Thanks all!

I think I will go ahead with it and start early. Using the garage and the water and fans are a great idea!

We recently had a weekend long garage sale that did fairly well. I drove around to the other garage sales in our neighborhood to check traffic the weekend before ours and there was a great traffic flow. That really helped cement our decision.

I am thinking of having one, too, after procrastinating all year. Do Saturday sales do well, or do hard-core garage salers stick to Thursdays or Fridays?
