You can also 'try out'

You can also 'try out' different ideas without having to invest a lot up front. Sites such as Ebay and Amazon allow you to offer goods and services for sale for small fees. This might be a good way for some to test their ideas as a first step before setting up a business. It's also a good way to get your name out there and generate interest and publicity.

My brother started on Ebay selling original artwork and now he has his own website that keeps him busy full time. The exposure on Ebay helped him build a reputation and bring in clients as well as generate income while getting started.

For really low-cost start-up

For really low-cost start-up and little risk, you might consider direct sales through companies such as Usborne Books. I'm a consultant and would be glad to share more information with anyone who is interested. If books aren't your thing, there are a ton of other companies out there. My daughter is a consultant for Lia Sophia jewelry. She is a SAHM and loves doing the jewelry shows.
