Many parents don't get past the first section of the baby name book when deciding what to call their bundle of joy.

Of the 100 most popular baby names for girls in 2006, 22 percent began with 'A.' For boys, the first letter of the alphabet came in second in the top 100 list, with 16 percent.

The next most popular letters for girls were 'M' at 13 percent followed by 'J' and 'S' with 8 percent each.

The most popular letter for boys was 'J' with 18 percent of the top 100 names. 'C' came in third at 7 percent.

Although the most popular names in Arizona can be quite different from the national norms, the popular first letters are strikingly consistent. For both boys and girls, the same letters top both the state and national baby-name lists.

Go to datacentral.azcentral.com to search a database of the top 100 baby names for Arizona from 1977 to 2006 and see how they compare nationally.

My son is an "A" name, but

My son is an "A" name, but you will not find another one in Arizona, mabye in Scotland or Ireland, but definitely not here.

My daughter is an "M" name and I wouldn't imagine there would be many with her name either as it is also of the Celtic variety.

It is better to be hated for what you are, than to be loved for what you are not.

My daughter has an "A" name,

My daughter has an "A" name, but I guarantee she'll always be the only one with that name in her class, if not school. It's hindu and and a very uncommon name unless you're of that ehtnicity.

As for the A name...my husband and I always knew we wanted to name our first boy Alexander. We didn't really look at other names. I also knew what middle name I'd give him.

We also had a name picked for a second boy, should we have had one. So I doubt we would have looked much. Our minds were set.

For Julia, we looked at tons of names. We totally couldn't agree. I recall looking at page after page of girl names, down to Y and Z given that I have a Y name.

Julia may not be super unusual, but we wanted something that worked in two languages (Spanish and English). Julia is it.

We have an A and a J. Our oldest is Ashley Elizabeth. My husbands middle name is Ashley and my middle name is Elizabeth. Then our middle is Julia Lauren, came to me in the shower one day. Then due in April is Nolan Donovan. Luckly I have a friend that has an embroidery business that can put their names on anything that I want. www.sweetpeababywear.com She came up with the business because of her kids hard to find names.

We couldn't come up with any

We couldn't come up with any girls names so it figures that I ended up being pregnant with a girl. We liked Parker but then ran across a name we LOVED more... Payton. Just by chance they both happened to start with a "P". So of course when our second came along and it was a girl also, we went with Parker. So now they are our "Sweet"P's" or our '2 "P's" in a pod". Cheesy, I know, but we love it.
