What is Diaper Rash or Thrush?
Amazingly, diaper rash and or thrush can be from a multitude of items; food allergies, skin irritation from diaper or wipes…but most commonly, it is from an over growth of yeast in their intestines. Some FYI’s for new moms…newborns do not have any bacteria in their intestines when they are born…they rely completely on what we as mothers give them through breast milk and/or formula.
Breast milk contains many amazing antibodies to help fight off invaders, along with good bacteria, but sometimes we also pass along bad bacteria and/or yeast, resulting in diaper rash or thrush for our little ones. So it is important to supplement our bodies and our newborns, toddlers and/or children’s bodies with ‘good bacteria’ or ‘probiotics’. Probiotics will assist our children’s intestines with proper digestion and absorption of foods and it will also increase their immune systems (did you know…60% of our immune system cells are built in the intestines) and overall make them happier.
Another benefit to balancing their intestines with probiotics, is a calmer demeanor in your child. This is because 95% of serotonin is stored in the small intestines, and if it is balanced and running efficiently, then our children are making more serotonin. So it is important for each of us moms to be taking probiotics and supplementing it for our babies so that they can have a healthy and balanced intestines…the happier the intestines the happier and healthier the baby.
Most of the time, women do not know that newborns are Not born with good bacteria in their intestines and go about as normal. And with the fluctuation of hormones after delivery, most women do get yeast infections in their intestines and do not know it. A couple of symptoms one might notice is that you may start to crave sweets, get bloated, constipated, IBS, food sensitivities, gas etc… my website describes more adult symptoms for yeast overgrowth at www.holisticwaters.com ). Even if you think you are balanced, I still believe that probiotics are amazing for just about anyone…because even if we are balanced today…it doesn’t mean that we will be tomorrow. Stress kills our good bacteria along with foods that we eat and any pathogen we might come in contact with on a daily basis.
When looking for probiotics it is so important to buy a HIGH quality bacteria. Please do your research before going and buying any probiotic…You can actually buy probiotics specific for newborns (it is important for it to have majority amounts of Lactobacillus – this colonizes the intestines for proper digestion and absorption of foods). If you are wondering how to give it to your newborn…you can buy it in powder form or you can open a capsule and put some on your breast during feeding. What I like to do is to put it on my son’s binki and have him suck on it for a little while before I breast feed him.
As for formula fed babies…again they do not have any bacteria for their intestines so its important to supplement. Remember 60% of immune cells are actually built in the intestines so a healthy and balanced intestine means a much healthier baby.
