Have you ever shared or bought someone else's left over fertility meds?

Optimist's picture

I've heard of reputable RE's looking the other way on this. If you say that you have a different brand of the meds that he prescribed, he didn't question it and simply gave dose information. Since 14 states madate coverage, some women get boxes of meds and then their IVF works and they have left over meds. Many donate them, but some sell them. Paying out of pocket is more than ridiculous - it's prohibitive. I'm wondering how sharing has worked out for those in the Phoenix area?

I never borrowed or

I never borrowed or purchased meds from others - that was too scary for me (I'm such a straight arrow and followed exactly each instruction as noted for medical procedures - which probably cost me more than many of those who are more creative with their meds - compared to me.) However, I do recall the last time I utilized my (yes extremely expensive) meds that I had several left over that I never used and were not opened. I had purchased them at a local Apothecary shop and their policy was that anything that was not opened or used could be returned. I returned several and got back a good portion of my costs - of course there was a 're shelfing' fee - but even with that it was sooo worth it. Hope that helps.

I would think twice about

I would think twice about sharing any kind of medication - you don't have any guarantees about what your getting and don't know who you're getting it from. To me, the risks don't outweigh the cost savings

No, I wouldn't share either

No, I wouldn't share either and I went through 5 iui's and 4 ivf's until I had to leave the state to finally become pregnant.. Yep the RE's in AZ are 10 behind in fertility issues girls!!!! That is pretty much a known fact. We in AZ are rated so poor on our up to date ground breaking treatments that we almost come in last in 50 states. 10 YRS behind is what I was told by 3 other out of state RE offices. They were like "OH, your from Arizona, Yes we see a lot of girls from Arizona b/c you are about 10 yrs behind in fertility treatments!!!!" Straight from 3 offices out of state!!! I wish someone would have told me that before we spent close to 60K on treatments in az... I'm getting off track.. Sorry...

To answer your question about buying from someone.. You are paying such a large sum of money to get pregnant and sometimes the first timw isn't a success. Here's one example: What if the person you bought that medication from could have left it in a car to long and the temp went a little to high (this is AZ) and it ruined the medication. With what you are paying out for the fertilityu treatments you don't want to ask yourself "if I just would have bought the medication new maybe this cycle have worked?" It's just not worth it. With all the stress you are going through that is something that needs to be a non issue.. Just get them new and not worry about the state of the medication.

If any of you have any questions about any of the AZ RE's I would be more than happy to share. I have been to all of them and they all said different things. Two RE's did say I needed to use someone elses egg. I think it was all they could come up with so they could keep their success rate high if I stayed with them for a 2nd cycle...The two RE's said I didn't produce any good eggs... Truely they are idiots!!. I went out of state and I got PG the first cycle...So for all the RE's in AZ that said I could not do it on my own and I needed someone elses eggs... After my successful IVF (out of state) I had my daughter, when she was 9 months old we found out that in fact we were pregnant all on our own... Now we have another perfect little baby to add to our little family.. Never take what the az RE's say!!! Whatever he is trying on you or wants you to pay for just think of going back to 1996..

Sorry I got side tracked agaon...

Wow - that's pretty daunting

Wow - that's pretty daunting information. Can you say specifically what the out of state doctors did differently? How did you do treatment out of state? Did you fly there for a length of time, or did you fly back and forth?

Diva, Are there any RE's you

itspersonalfavors's picture

Diva,
Are there any RE's you would recommend here in AZ or is it smarter for me to go back to NY when I am ready to start trying again? If you don't mind me asking, what is the cause of your IF? I have PCOS & although I got pregnant on my own with my son, baby #2 is giving us a real hard time. I just moved out here from NY & was hoping that AZ would be a little luckier for us but after reading your post I am not so sure.....
Thanks

Since NY state mandates

Optimist's picture

Since NY state mandates infertility insurance coverage, I would RUN back to NY. IF you need IVF, won't most employers in NY cover it? If I didn't already have two kids in school, surrounded by family, I would move back to NY for a couple of years too.
