My 14 yr old daughter is going on a trip, starting Saturday, with her Nana. So I thought I'd plan a fun-filled weekend with her 9 yr old sister. Other than pottery painting (we did that recently), movies, pizza places (ugh) and bowling (I will if I have to), does anyone have any ideas? We live in Glendale, and I'm kind of hoping to stay within ten miles or so of home if at all possible.

What about one of the

What about one of the waterparks? The IMAX is farther then ten miles but I believe they are showing whales and dolphins. Looks incredible!

Hours: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; guests may take a self-guided tour anytime during regular factory hours, but there are also guided 30-minute tours at 10 and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday

Admission: Free, but bring some money for the store after the tour.or to make your own chocolate pizza after the tour! The chocolate pizza experience is $7 per person (pies may be split), and expect to add on an extra 20 minutes or so to your stay.

You might want to eat something filling (or not!) before heading on over to this family-owned chocolate factory. A free, 30-minute guided tour is offered at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, but you can also take a self-guided tour (or even a virtual tour online, if you can't make it over in person). A great experience for all ages, but you'll probably want to bring some extra spending money. There is, after all, a factory store full of goodies just waiting to go home with you.

How about a beading class?

Life2Short's picture

How about a beading class? My ten year old daughter loves to bead. It's something you two could do together. Check Michael's or a beading store close by. Also, we buy projects that the kids choose from Michael's to work on during the week or car trips.
Other ideas:
--Visit a museum
--Window shop at antique stores (there are several in Glendale!)
--Have her pick a subject and learn about it. Check out books from the library. Have her create her own book about the subject and make a craft using the subject as a guide.
--Pick out a "chick-flick," pop popcorn and enjoy a movie together.
--Take her out to dinner at a "grown up" restaurant. Order a Shirley Temple in a wine glass.
--Make your own ice cream sundaes.
--Ask her what she would like to do (within reason) during her special week with Mommy...and then do it!
