Does anyone have a Betafish?

LaraPiu's picture

First of all, my daughter insists that I share with the moms that I protested when her Grandpa and her purchased a betafish at the Dollar Store. I even made them keep it at his house! When my parents left for vacation, I agreed to let "Beaty" stay here and gosh darnit I feel in love with that little thing hook, line and sinker. ;)

So this fish never eats. He's been with us for almost a week and not a slice of food in all that time. Is this normal? He does come to the top of the water sometimes and make a little "bloop" sound. So then I feed him and he still eats nothing. This makes my Italian genes cringe. Do you think this fish is trying to interact with me? Am I loosing my mind? (Hey wait, don't answer that!)

I have a terrible track

I have a terrible track record taking care of fish, so I did some poking around on the internet. I found a seemingly useful website:
http://www.better-bettas.com/a/feeding-beta-fish.shtml

There's a number of pages that you can review for assistance.

You could call a fish store that sells Betas and ask them for advice. It looks like they are very sensitive and tempermental to certain environments. I've had great luck calling pet stores for guidance at the beginning of their business day because it's before things get busy.

Good luck!

Beta fish are extremly hardy

ckajlm's picture

Beta fish are extremly hardy fish! Those suckers take a beating and keep on ticking! Just keep giving it food once a day, it will eat when it wants to.

We've had a beta for almost

We've had a beta for almost a year and I don't know how it survives but it does!! I don't know much but I do know that you're only supposed to feed then once a week and not very much. This poor fish is in a litle tank my daughter only cleans once a month but the fish is thriving!! I know you are never supposed to put another fish in with a beta. Good luck!

Aww I cried when I

Lavender_Sea's picture

Aww I cried when I accidently killed my beta. He was so cool. They can survive in the nastiest water, but my mistake was to buy him a regular tank with a filter. I guess before you get fish into a tank you have to make sure the water has a stable PH, and I didn't know that. I basically burned my fish. Killed me when I found out it was my fault. Of course he wasn't doing so hot before I got the tank either. We had him for about a year. Anyway they make bubbles at the surface of the water because that is where the potential female would lay her eggs if there was one. They also like to eat blood worms, and they are supposed to eat plants if you have a live one in there. You can always call petsmart and find out more info too. I bought a snail once for his tank and they tend to eat the feelers off of those too and then the snails die. I loved my fish. I almost killed him by accidently putting him in too cold of water when I cleaned out his tank once, and another time I guess some soap had gotten into the bubble filter that we got him and we came home to soap in the tank. He just kept on going. Such a good guy. They totally have personalities if you ask me.

IF you go to walmart and ask

DayCareSam's picture

IF you go to walmart and ask them they might be able to help you. I can't remember the name of the food, the next time I go to the store I will let you know. They love a certain food more than anything else. I think it is dried worms or something of that nature, it is right with all the beta food. Good luck.

Hi there, Betas are terrific

Niftydevil's picture

Hi there, Betas are terrific pets. We actually have one here in my office as sort of a team pet. He's been with us for 18 months, so I guess that's a pretty good track record for a fish! We feed him twice a day, with a pellet food. We too tried the flakes and he hated them. But we drop about 4-5 of these tiny little pellets on the top of his water and he just sucks them up. They are really hearty fish. Our guy gets his water changed once per week and we have a balancing additive that we add to the water to make sure its at the right pH. He also has a live plant, which I've never seen him eat, but he does love to swim through and sleep in the roots. We also have a tank heater in there to make sure that the AC in our office doesn't make his water go below the standard 78 degrees they are supposed to thrive in. Hope this helps!

I had a betafish once and I

There is no way to be a perfect mother, but a million ways to be a good one!

We had one and he lived for

ryzagaja's picture

We had one and he lived for a long time! They are so low maintenance and take up no space at all, he lived in a small vase with rocks in the bottom! We just cleaned the water when it got nasty and fed him the food that said "beta" on the package! They really are kinda pretty fish. We have a cheapy goldfish now that my son "won" at a school carnival, amazingly enough, he has survived almost a month already, when he leaves this world, we will replace him with a Beta!

So glad to hear different

So glad to hear different feedback from beta moms because I thought they were pretty hardy so when I read that they were "sensitive" to certain types of water, environments, I was pretty surprised.
