Don't want to look like a mom?!?

I was in Ann Taylor yesterday trying on spring clothes, and I heard this woman in a nearby dressing room telling the saleswoman helping her that she didn't want to try on clothes that made her "look like a mom," and she said it as if this was the worst thing possible. I thought, OMG, what an awful thing to say! I'm a mom and I think I look great -- I wouldn't want to not look like a mom. I came very close to saying something to her about her comment. And then I thought, well, what does a mom look like, anyway??

She probably meant that she doesn't want to look like HER mom, and she probably associated some of the clothes with that look. Her mom, may simply be the most stylish woman around, but she still wouldn't want to look like her. It's kid thing.

Yeah, I can totally see

DesertMom's picture

Yeah, I can totally see that. But, the thing is that she was roughly my age -- maybe late 30's, early 40's. And she said she doesn't want to look like "a" mom -- that's what got me.

Yeah, I'd be kinda rolling

LaraPiu's picture

Yeah, I'd be kinda rolling my eyes on that one, too! You know what gets me are the ads for plastic surgeons in local magazines for the "Post-Baby Tune-Up" (tummy tuck, boob lift/implants, lipo). As soon as we have a baby, I guess we're automatically supposed to be dissatisfied with our bodies. Not that I'm completely opposed to plastic surgery--if it makes a woman feel better, that's fine--it's just rather silly that we're no longer "allowed" to have body flaws after giving birth to another human being; it's now "bad" to look like a mom? Gimme a break! Like you said--what, exactly, does a mom look like, anyway?!

I don't know that there is one look that can be defined as the "mom" look. I think everyone has different styles and different ideas of what a "mom" looks like. I think this is kind of funny. Knowing me, i would have hung around to see what she looked like.

Maybe she was trying, in what she thought was a nice round about way to say - i don't want to look old. (I am not saying moms are old, because i am a mom and LOVE being a mom.)

I'm getting a kick out of

TOJ2005's picture

I'm getting a kick out of this because I am an "old" mom with a toddler and so I DO want to look like a mom! haha Maybe someone will think I'm still in my 30s! (or maybe I'm in denial...)

I wouldn't take it so

Katy1999's picture

I wouldn't take it so personally.....there is no standard mom look, really....mom's at my son's school run the gamut from perfect hair, makeup and Prada bags to sweats ,sneakers and ponytails.........as for your fellow Ann Taylor shopper....she was probably thinking she doesn't want to look her actual age, too conservative and "unhip" or "frumpy".....or as Optimist said like her own mother. No matter what, most ladies don't want to look like their mom, becuase them that means you are getting older, etc...My mom is still a striking woman at 69, she has always been a beauty but I have to admit I am taken aback when people say I look so much like her...because I don't want to be her!
There are those people out there who look down on us "breeders", though........and I say to heck with those people. Who cares if some random lady doesn't want to look like a mom - I am a mom and I think I am not half bad - and I have seen your photo on your blog and you look fantastic.
This is a little off the subject, but I always wonder why some women attempt to conceal their real age or outright lie about it...........I am thinking of telling people I am 40 instead of my actual 36 so they will say "wow, you look great, I can't beleive it".....lol just kidding

HAHAHA!!! I love that

phoenixgrlkim1's picture

HAHAHA!!! I love that (telling people your 40 part)!!! I'm 30 and I love looking "mom." In fact, at age 26 I decided to dump my trashy, club looking clothes and shop more at NY & Company and JC Penneys rather than and junior section (I was a mom, worked in an upscale office, and had grown up and felt it time to leave that look behind). I think to each is own. I think some older moms do it in the hopes that they "feel" younger. What they haven't learned is you are the age you feel. The best quote I have ever heard is this..."How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were?" It makes you realize that your heart and spirit is what keeps you young not your age, clothes or looks!

On the chance side she was motherless and looking down on us "breeders" as Katy puts it ;), I'm happy with that "mom" title...it's the best title I've ever owned.

I love "looking like a mom" Its a great excuse for having larger hips and curves. LOL...I always laugh when I try on jeans at the mall, what real person over the age of 16 can fit into those jeans...I mean really!!!! They must think everyone is like a board. I love being curvey...all thru school I was so skinny and I hated it, at least I can fill out a dress and look sexy...watch out Marilyn.

Awesome attitude!! I love my body too -- it's not what you'd see on a magazine cover, but I'm proud of all that it's accomplished -- the whole miracle of producing life -- and you're right, it's a great excuse for looking "like a Mom."

I love looking like a mom. I am so proud of having had my two boys - what a bizarre comment. Like you said maybe she was referring to looking older ...but then again...we all get older..there is nothing wrong with aging. Funny...regardless...that is just part of mommyhood. I guess I still feel 28...ten years younger than my actual age. Its all a mattter of how you look at yourself - i feel young - thus others think i'm young too.

Do you remember the SNL fake

crazymama's picture

Do you remember the SNL fake commercial for "Mom jeans"? They were very high waisted, with elastic waist. Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, and Amy Poehler played the "Moms", and they wore vests and had bobbed haircuts. Everything you can possibly think of to strip feminity and sexiness out of a look. It was very funny. I would suggest that this is the look the woman in the dressing room was trying to avoid.

Crazymama...I was so

Crazymama...I was so thinking that when I was reading the post.......love it! LOL
I have always looked younger ( so I am told )...so I used to spend my time looking older...now trying to look younger...ha..ha
I agree she most likely wants to look younger or hip for her kids......doesn't want to hear " Mom, really are you gonna wear that " ?

Was that me? haha I said

Ericka's picture

Was that me? haha I said that to my mom the other day when she picked out some tops she thought were "cute". Of course in my mind is picturing a woman in "mom jeans", or tapered trousers with pleats in the front and a bad fitting shirt. Or a woman in an old pair of sweats with her hair unbrushed, or the infamous helmet head haircut.

You see the "mom" type a lot on What-Not-To-Wear.

This just cracked me up.

not_the_mama's picture

This just cracked me up. When my older brother started school, he hated that his Mom didn't look like a Mom; somebody asked him if that was his babysitter. She was already in her 30's, but she was blessed with a great figure (even after 3 kids), great grooming habits, and a talent for dressing classy on a budget. She never wore what she would have called "kid's clothes".

At five -- clever little boy -- he went on a campaign to try to get her to eat more, so she wouldn't be a size 6 or 8 anymore (I'm guessing on the sizes based on what I've worn). He brought her aprons and headscarves to put on.

Not wanting to look like a Mom? Not wanting to look like a Grandmother? What happened to wanting to wanting to move past looking like a schoolgirl in favor of looking like a mature professional woman? I promise there will be more from me on this (yeah, like the cooking/shopping thing; I just haven't gotten on the right roll yet).

I know she wasn't talking about my Mom, either of my Grandmothers, or any of my aunts, because L&T would be the perfect place for me to bring in pictures of any of them and ask, "Can you make me look as good as they do here?"

Not looking like our Moms? Who would we, as adults, prefer to look like?

It is funny when you see a mom dressing like her teenage daughter though! Makes me smile as I walk by in my comfortable clothes!

Mom of teenage boys!

That's funny. One of my

divaballerina's picture

That's funny. One of my girlfriends from Scottsdale, went to visit friends in CA not to long ago and her friend that doesn't have kids yet saw her and said "OMG you have the Mom haircut" Like it was a bad thing... My friend was really offended. We were like "Moms have a certain haircut"????

Maybe one of the moms here touched on it.. Maybe she didn't want to look like her mom... My mom always wears denim.. ALWAYS! So my sisters and I always make fun and one time we saw this denim vest.. we just looked at each other and said.."Nana would love that vest"! We sort of banned her from buying our little girls denim too.. She would have them in denim jumpers 24/7... or vests... YIKES!
I guess I have even used the term "MOM JEANS" when I see women with jeans that cover the belly button.. (not the stylish high waist ones that are coming back in.. You know the ones that have that long front zipper area that come up really high... A zipper shouldn't be longer than maybe a few inches.. not a whole ruler,..... We call those MOM JEANS,. So I guess I am sort of guilty of saying that....

I agree that it's sad when the moms try and dress like teenagers!!! Even if your blessed with a great rockn bod as a mom. You still look ridiculous if you and your babysitter could share clothes... I don't think anyone in there 30's or 40's should wear anything that says "JUICY" on the butt!! They can wear the brand if they want just don't stick the name on your backside.... It's sort of like seeing Madonna in a leotard.. Great she is still making music and she is still in shape,
but EW!!! I don't want to see her in spandex!!!

(my apologizes to the sun city dancers.. Ya'll are cute as can be)!!!!

I don't think anyone of any age should wear the word "juicy" on their behind.....lol

My honey has been trying to

not_the_mama's picture

My honey has been trying to get me to let loose of my pleated khaki pants and loose-fitting shirts for a couple of years now. I do wear Levis -- but loose-fitting. I'm not giving up the nun haircut. I'm not sure I'm going to get rid of *all* the vests, either. But I'm willing to try on some different pants and tops.

Here's my question. No matter what my weight, my waist is significantly smaller than my hips and backside. Short-waisted pants make me look like a pear with a stripe across the widest part. I'm also way too old to show skin between pant and top when I raise my arms or bend forward. Has anyone found a line of pants and/or tops that aren't frumpy, but are also made for women who have actually gone through puberty?

I hear you on that one!!

DesertMom's picture

I hear you on that one!! Finding cute, stylish jeans that don't reveal your entire rear when you sit down is such a chore....
I personally can't wait till the short-waisted look is out.

Actually, when I was in Ann Taylor, which started this whole conversation, I was trying on pants and I actually found a couple of pairs of cotton cropped pants for spring that had a little stretch to them and were really cute and comfy at the same time. I can actually squat down to tie my daughter's shoes without exposing my whole backside. And I found a cute top to put with them that has a tie that you can use to cinch in the waist.

Took me forever to find some

Ericka's picture

Took me forever to find some jeans and pants that fit me well, but when I did I bought a few pair. I'm addicted to What-Not-To-Wear and 10 years younger, they have great tips when you get the right episode (someone with a similar body type).

Pleats by the way make your hips look much wider than they are. It sounds like your hubby may want to see a little more of your body instead of hiding it beneath oversized clothes.
