I am just online and everywhere you look, there is always a horrible story about someone having their life taken from them and it just makes me sick. This world and what can happen is so terrifying. How do you try to be happy and think good things when all these horrible things are happening to people. I am sorry, I just do not deal with such things very well. Especially now that I am a parent, it effects me even more.

Yeah I know how that is. I
Yeah I know how that is. I used to not think about it or care, but since I've had my son I always think what is something were to happen to me. I try to be a lot more cautious now too.
Seems like there are a lot of crazy people anymore who feel the need to kill others.

I was thinking the same
I was thinking the same thing after reading about the wierdo that killed the guy on the bus and how distrubing that was and how horrifying for the victume.. And then they show c.rap shows on tv. Like tonight when i came downstairs from being in my daughters room the tv was on channel 12 and some horror show was on called "fear itself" or something like that.. No one was watching tv, I think my husband went to bed earlier and left the tv on and it was on ch12. anyways the show was showing some possessed guy and his wife was cutting up and then eating the dead.. you get the picture, it was just sickening.. I guess i was just shocked that this horrible stuff is on tv. And a lot of jr. high age kids dont go to bed until 10 so the see this stuff. I guess ppl want to see this cause it must be getting ratings to be on tv.. I don't even like going to see this stuff on the theater, much less tv.. And nowdays, this can really happen.. I mean look at the wierdo on the Greyhound bus and what he did, He was probably as possessed and demonized as the guy on this tv show, and he didnt even know the guy.. and didnt think twice that their were all these ppl on the bus at the time. I am surprised he didnt hurt anyone else.. He certainly mentally affected the ppl that had to be on the bus and see and hear the screams.. It's just so distrubing..
Sex and violence has really overcome the TV it's on allday long..
" just my Opinion" LOL
I think the hardest thing as
I think the hardest thing as a parent is to try to get this message across to your kids that there are crazy people out there and you have to be careful and not scare them so much that it makes them so cynical and scared of the world!

I'm not sure if there is
I'm not sure if there is more violence in the world today, or if we just hear about more of it.
A generation ago, we got all our news from the newpaper, the 5:00 or 10:00 news, and the radio. There was a limit to the time and space available to spread doom and gloom. Today, between online news services and CNN, there's a lot of time and blank space to fill.
We bring it on ourselves, to a certain extent. If you go to the AZCentral home page, and click on the "Most Read" tab in Also in the News, you'll see which stories people read. Currently, a Canadian bus beheading seems to be popular.
Yes, there are whack jobs and dangerous people in the world. The decent folks way outnumber them.
How do you try to be happy? I don't know what works for you, but, if I find myself horrified by a news piece, I try to do something positive to change my focus.
The best thing we can do is
The best thing we can do is refuse to accept that this is 'just the way things are' and teach our children to reject violence. And yes, that means in TV shows, video games, and any entertainment form. Inflicting pain shouldn't be a 'spectator sport' or a selling point for anything. I understand that the news media has to cover these horrible stories, but it doesn't have to hype them and positively drool over itself while doing so.
As for our own kids, we need to reinforce the fact that yes, there are 'sick' people in the world who do bad things, but it's true they are far outnumbered by good people who do wonderful things. Point out examples of kind, decent behavior whenever you can and remind them that's what makes the world great! Also, we must not let ourselves or our kids become the vast 'mushy middle' that just shrugs and says "oh well, what can you do?" when confronted with evil. There IS something we can all do: condemn evil without hesitation or apology and without making excuses for it!
So take heart, there is always hope!

Right on miriamvs. I always
Right on miriamvs. I always say I still have faith in humanity. The news will repeat the same tragic stories over and over. TV is awful now. I am constantly amazed at what I see and hear next on tv. My kids usually watch the same shows but even then there is crushes, kisses, and mature topics. I watch HGTV, FoodNetwork, A&E and Lifetime. The show differentdrum mentioned sounds horrific!

So let's continue to keep
So let's continue to keep God and prayer out of school, and let's continue to be wussies when someone feels 'offended' that we talk about trying to live a holy/clean life.
God, in his infinite wisdom, gives us the answer to making this world better:
2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

I totally agree with you,
I totally agree with you, but a lot of ppl are afriad or ashamed to admit that as you put it "God, in His infinite wisdon, gives us the answers to making this world better.
And then there are the ones who cant give up control of their life.. I believe all things happen for a reason.. And i never give up on praying to God to make this world better or that others will see that we/they can do nothing without Him..
When I pulled my daughter out of christian school, a lot of the parents wouldnt talk to me or let their kids play with my daughter anymore..God has a plan for everyone's life and it's not all the same. And ppl who think that their kids are better just because they are in private school are so wrong.. What do those same parents say to the parent next to them who's kid is also in private school and the kid dies of OD on drugs or so. (like the mom on the commercial, who claims she new nothing about her sons addiction) I say claims, because it's hard for me to believe that there werent signs, and they were ignored because of the mentality "my kids a christian, goes to christian school, he would never be doing anything bad, maybe he's just having a bad week "" .. ok i know i went off the subjuct on the topic here.. But im miffed about something right now.. So anyway, I do agree with you....
" just my Opinion" LOL
Very true, how do you not
Very true, how do you not know in some cases. And God even warns us about those who 'claim' to be Christians who really aren't. Just because you go to church or do good things does not mean you are a Christian. (That's a whole other discussion!) ; )
Anyhoot, all we can do is lead our children by example and pray God keeps them.

Anna, while I will concur
Anna, while I will concur that we are called, as Christians, to constantly examine our own lives, and to ask for guidance and forgiveness -- I don't think the answer is putting "God and prayer" back into schools.
Now, I haven't sat down and had a cup of coffee with you, so I am not saying anything about you or where you are coming from. I'm just offering my take.
Separation of Church and State aside, school is "the world" for children as much as our workplaces and markets are to us. We are called to be Christ to the world -- not to impose Christ on the world. The problem with chalking up evil to the Godless is that we can't do that unless we judge others to be Godless.
I'm not ready to do that. I will bet that what you feel called to do to lead a holy/clean life is different from what I feel called to do to lead a holy/clean life. I have friends who are Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, and LDS who feel just as strongly about the way they're called to a holy/clean life.
I was, from a young age, taught that Evil -- in whatever shape it takes -- delights in watching the children of God persecute one another rather than identify their common purposes.
I think that that's the source of the most of the horror in our world today. The primary lesson: to "love our neighbors as ourselves" is daunting, but if we could manage to learn it -- really learn it -- that would be more powerful than any would-be despot who achieves power via intimidation and/or fear.
Besides, what prayers would we have children offer? They say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning, and, if you asked a classroom of 7th graders to write it down, only a handful would get it right.
I know these stories can be
I know these stories can be so overwhelming that at times it is hard to watch any type of news story, but at the same time I like to stay informed. There is definitely a fine line and at times my husband will ask me how I can watch certain news stories or read about yet another abduction. I empathize so much with people who are going through such situations.
