A little freaked out

Well I have lived in the neighborhood that I am at for 5 months, haven't had any problems with this house particularly but the neighbors and other people on the streets around us have had their homes broken into several times. I didn't know how bad of an area this was or I would not have moved here, my realtor found it for us. So, my lease is not even up until January. I am thinking of asking the landlord to provide some kind security for the house. I had to share, I am just freaked out about all the robbings in my area. I live by south mountain. These people are getting robbed in broad daylight too! These intrudors are getting more and more ruthless.

That is everywhere though! I

That is everywhere though! I live ina pretty good neighborhood that you would think is the last place to have problems and plenty of people around here have had there houses broken into. Arizona is turning into a bad place and no one wants to do a thing about it.

That's scary. Your realtor

That's scary.
Your realtor really dropped the ball. It should have been his/her responsibility to find out some details about the neighborhood and disclose any sort of problems, leaving the final decision up to you.

I really don't think your landlord has any sort of obligation to provide any kind of security system. You can ask him if you can install one at your own expense, but if the installation involves any special wiring, make sure you go over the details of the install with him. Get the okay in writing, just to protect yourself (and your security deposit).

Your families safety is worth the added expense, even if it's only until Jan.

Good luck...and come January, get a new realtor! Do some investigating of new neighborhoods yourself, in addition to whatever you're told.

I will, I have been away

I will, I have been away from Arizona for 6 years so I dont know really what is a good area to live in, can anyone suggest some decent areas. I know it can happen anywhere but I would like to know of some decent to good areas that people know of. Thanks so much.

We live in north central

We live in north central Phoenix and have also heard of break ins. It seems crime happens in waves around the city.

One of your best things you can do is to get to know your neighbors. Be sure to introduce yourself at least to those immediately around you. I've found that we can look out for each other, especially if some of us work outside the home.

If there isn't a block watch, start one! Go to this City of Phoenix website to find out how to start one: http://phoenix.gov/POLICE/bwp1.html.

I lived a lot of different

I lived a lot of different kinds of areas, and I don't think you can determine much about burgleries and robberies by how the neighborhood looks or the budgets of the residents.

I agree that getting to know your neighbors is a great first step. You'd all be more apt to notice someone (or car), or particularly couple or three kids where they didn't belong. Burglers don't like to have people pay attention to them.

If you have nice stuff in your living room, close the blinds or the shades when you're out of the house.

I noticed, the last time that I was at Fry's Electronics, you can buy one of those signs that say you have a particular brand of security systems separate from the system.

But do, even if you have to pay for it, put deadbolts on all your exterior doors and your windows, and some of those metal slide locks; you can buy all of them at Lowes. The only time I've had a home broken into is when I just accepted the locks (and wasn't aware that they hadn't been changed since the previous tennant.

Good luck.

You can visit phoenix.gov

You can visit phoenix.gov website or call the Phoenix Police information desk 602-262-7626 and they can give you crime statistics for your area and what type of crimes are being committed. Trust me when I say anywhere you go, there will be crime.
Good luck
