The "point thing" was started with the relaunch of the site last year to track postings for some incentive rewards, but it is not being used for anything at the moment. We were discussing it in our "moms" meeting today. Wow, I love the idea of using points to buy things! I'll have to mention that one! As of now they don't mean anything, but we are brainstorming.
