Bananas = Boys?!

ArizonaMoms's picture

A British study suggests having "a hearty appetite, eating potassium-rich foods including bananas, and not skipping breakfast all seemed to raise the odds of having a boy," according to an AP story.

The research is touted as the "first in humans to show a link between a woman's diet and whether she has a boy or girl."

I posted the story in the "Just for Moms" section.

So what do you think?

I do recall craving bananas when I was pregnant with Alex (I avoided them before because they made my mouth itch), but I also wanted them when I was carrying Julia. And I ate a lot with both of them. Weight exactly 176 when I delivered both (gaining 48 & 42 pounds, respectively) How about you?

I had a boy and never once

I had a boy and never once craved bananas. I didn't eat too many of them beforehand either. But he on the other hand can't get enough of them - he is 2 and eats one a day.

Hehe, same here. Only I

Hehe, same here. Only I couldn't stand bananas when I was pregnant with Davy, and he absolutely adores them.

I ate alot of bananas while

I ate alot of bananas while I was pregnant with my son, but I always have and still do. I did crave raspberries, yogurt and milk when I was pregnant. Funny thing is my son can't stand fresh raspberries!

And what makes a girl? All I

And what makes a girl?

All I can say is that I had this ridiculous instant craving for tomatoes before I found out I was pregnant with Kelly...so bad that I literally stocked up tomato soups in the refrigerator. My husband initially thought my thyroid is off or something. And I also ate like a horse. Now she eats anything - has a very good diet - loves salads, etc.

With Sky, I didn't have any cravings and further down the pregnancy, I drank a lot of Ensure Mom - a lot had to do with dealing with almost losing my husband at the hospital. And now, she drives me insane! She eats very little and doesn't seem interested in tasting a whole variety of food.

I don't know about certain types of food determines the sex of a baby but I am curious if mom's eating habits during pregnancy have something to do with how babies eat once out of the oven??

That is an interesting

lisamommy's picture

That is an interesting study. Mostly because I do not like bananas and only eat them when my legs hurt really bad and I know I need the potassium. So, during my pregnancy with both boys I dont recall eating them. What I did eat lots of with my first son was lemons - literally I'd slice it and enjoy it just like that and tons of olives - could not get enough olives. I also ate lots of vegetable and to this day my son lOVES tomatoes and broccoli. I actually have to give him the protein (chicken) first then put the tomato or broccoli on his plate last otherwise he'll only eat that and wont eat the chicken. So, uncertain if bananas equal boys? My husband always tells me its all a 50/50 chance each time is independent than the other. I agree - I think it just comes down to the lucky sperm that joins the egg first. I didnt plan for my kids to be a boy or girl - just wanted a child - however after I was pregnant I looked up the Chinese Calendar for gender. Both times it noted I was having a girl. Well, it was 2 boys. I think that kind of stuff is fun to look at and wonder if it truly is 'true'...but I don't take it too seriously.

I ate more bannanas when I

LaraPiu's picture

I ate more bannanas when I was pregnant only because I was having charlie horses in both legs every night and it was horrible. Kinda seems like a stilly thing to study but appently the researchers saw a value to having this information.
