I've heard a lot of buzz

I've heard a lot of buzz about this movie. However, what is it about (okay - yes about birth) but really what is it focused on? A natural birth, adoption & birth, surrogacy & birth. I'm just wondering what the focus of the birth topic is about?

I hear the Ricki Lake part

I hear the Ricki Lake part is very minimal. Isn't this more of a birthing practices documentary? I don't think it is "important" to watch or a "must watch"....its just one of many options for women to research birthing practices. And it obviously will be one film maker's opinion of birthing.

how interesting, it might be

As a Doula, it will be interesting to get your perspective on it. Please report about it after you've seen it. I'm done with the baby birthin'. I've doubled my children everytime, I can't risk that happenin' again! But I do find the process, and how it can be unique every single time so interesting...

The movie was pretty good.

The movie was pretty good. As a doula and childbirth educator, I've seen alot of birth movies and this one was pretty well done. However, there was so much buzz about it in advance, I think it would be very hard to live up to the expectations.

. The movie was a documentary about choices in childbirth, mostly focusing on alternatives to standard birthing practices in the US. It pointed out the fact that for most women, midwifery care, and out-of hospital births are safe. In most countries, healthy, low-risk women receive all their maternity care from midwives and obstetricians are called in only in the case of complications.

So Ricki Lake and the movie's producer follow a home-birth midwife on her rounds in Manhattan. There are some really beautiful birth scenes.... they also interview lots of different care providers, both MDs and midwives, childbirth educators, etc. The film gets its drama from the fact that Abby Epstein, the film's producer, finds out she's pregnant during the making of the film, so you get to see how her pregnancy and birth unfolds.

Again, not the best birth film I've ever seen, but it's still worth a look, if you have a chance to see it.
