I own a retail store for babies and children and with the economy the way it has been, things have been slower than normal--to say the least. Everyone is telling us that we will be okay once the rebates come in the mail as people have to buy baby furniture, etc and it will help people buy the things they need but haven't been able to afford as that's what they are designed to do---boost spending to help us all.
So I'm wondering--MOMS--will you be spending your rebate check or sticking it in the bank??

Not the answer you'd prefer
Not the answer you'd prefer to hear, but we would absolutely simply pay a bill with the check - or put it into the bank. Instead of going out and buying something else, we would use it to pay for something we already have.
I seem to recall that the last time there was one of these checks that went out (right after Bush took office and after 9/11) - there was a lot of analysis done after the fact. Apparently, it did NOTHING to stimulate the economy.
Personally, I sure wish our public schools got an infusion of all that cash - instead of sending out this "stimulus." Or, our police and fire departments, or our public roads/highways, or used for insurance for un-insured children, or, the list goes on and on........

That's what we're afraid
That's what we're afraid of---so many of our networking partners in retail as well are hurting too. It's really getting scary for some. I think the only places that will be around soon are the Target and Walmart type stores as all the smaller businesses are going to go out of business one by one...

I think plenty of people
I think plenty of people will still mindlessly spend the money, no matter how much debt they are in. These are the people the stimulus package is aimed at. The smart thing for most people to do is to bank that money or pay down their debt, not go out and buy more (inappropriate term) like good little doobies, but we live in a society of spend now, pay later.....I don't like how the goverment is encouraging people to spend this money when that really isn't in their best interest.....the message that the dream of home ownership was never more acheivable was also pushed by the govt a few years back.....when it really wasn't realistic for many people and they got in over their heads - and now what a mess we are in.
I am wondering if we will have to claim this money as income on our 2008 taxes......supposedly this is money we hve already paid as tax, and it would not suprise me to see them tax us on it next year.
I'm afraid this great rebate
I'm afraid this great rebate idea Bush had will have little to zero effect on the economy. I will be paying down debt as well as nearly everyone I talk to.
sure, fine, whatever
I need a new computer. I am
I need a new computer. I am about to throw the one I have out a window :) So, I will be "mindlessly spending" my check "like a good little dooby" :) Can't wait to see that brand new IMac sitting on my desk!
LOL...I hear you. I'll be
LOL...I hear you. I'll be buying airline tickets to take my kids to Orlando for vacation. There are plenty of us out there who don't carry credit card balances and have no debt (other than a mortgage) to pay down. I guess I'm a mindless little doobie too! LOL....
Well, if the shoe
Well, if the shoe fits....lol
I was actually referring to people who DO have a lot of debt and make a habit of not doing the responsible thing....I'm sure you are aware there are a few of those folks out there as well, right............of course, people are free to do what they want, but IMHO if you are struggling at this point with a mountain of debt and someome drops a grand in your lap, spending is a foolish choice. Wouldn't you agree?
We are putting my son in
We are putting my son in preschool in the fall and have been wondering how we will afford the extra payment for his tuition each month. This money will be going to his preschool - good timing for us!
We'll be saving--boring I
We'll be saving--boring I know. With the cost of gas and food rising and my hubby in a commission industry, we need all the savings we can get--you just never know.

My husband and I have
My husband and I have discussed this at length. We know we should be "good" and either pay down some debt or put it into savings, but we've had a really, really rough few years, and decided we're going to take our son to San Diego for a long weekend. We're all in serious need of some fun and some R&R; though we should do the "responsible" thing, we find our sanity is in more dire need of attention than our bank account!
Not sure what we are going
Not sure what we are going to do with it. My husband just moved offices and it took a lot of money to get the new place up to par. I would like to save it, he will probably want to spend it!!

it will go towards to our
it will go towards to our new house :)
H~
I'm afraid ours has to go
I'm afraid ours has to go towards a house a/c and our car's a/c. Our home one has been on this house since it was built, in 1973. It is completely shot. The only car we have is now blowing hot air instead of cold when we turned it on.
We had planned on spending a bit and saving most of it, but you know how plans go.
I feel bad for all the small business owners, this has to be a harrowing time for them. I hope you can ride it out, this will end, hopefully sooner than later. I would rather buy from small businesses than Walmart any day.
Mom of sons M (18), J (14), and daughter S (11) ... I love them all but heaven help me, some days I want to run away :)
A portion will go into my
A portion will go into my daughters savings account. But the rest, i am not sure. Our only debt is our mortgage. Maybe we will treat ourselves or improve something around the house.
just~me
We will be spending
We will be spending ours....probably right when it comes in! We will do our part to boost the ecomony! :) ...I know, we should probably save it, but there are things we want....
