This month's APS BILL!!!!!

braybee's picture

We don't live a a huge house....approx 1300 square feet. We don't pump the AC....usually set to 78-80 degrees. Come to think of it, this past month we have not done much out of the ordinary. I am pretty careful about doing laundry or running the dishwasher during peak times.

Sooooo, why am a freaking out about this months APS bill....$200!!! Over the past 3 months it has been progressively worse...$110 (fine), then $160 (hmmm, what's going on) and now $200???!!!!

Like I said, I am not living life any differently so why such a jump? Of course, I know it's been hotter, but could the air make that much of a diff when I hardly touch the thermostat? UGH! Sorry for whining, but I need to vent!

Same here...ours was about

Beth's picture

Same here...ours was about $400 this month, about $100 more than last. Maybe the humidity makes the A/C have to work harder, or something like that?

Beth

I'm with you - ours jumped

caret's picture

I'm with you - ours jumped $150 this month and we didn't change anything. The only differences I saw was that the avg daily temp was about 14 degrees higher and there were more days in the cycle but I am still shocked that it caused such a drastic difference.

I live in a 1600 square ft 2

azmama2's picture

I live in a 1600 square ft 2 story home, I have my air always set between 73-75 degrees and my bill hasn't went over $220. We have SRP

Our SRP bill was up $25

me's picture

Our SRP bill was up $25 dollars compared to last years billing period at this time. But we had used less electricity according to our statement. Obviously the rate increase has kicked in for us. Pretty sure i hears APS was increasing rates too.

We are around $200 and this is rather normal for the month of July and August and then it starts to go back down.

Our SRP bill jumped from $178 for the previous month to $255 this month......what the hell!
I was really suprised because I don't think we are doing anything differently.

OUCH! I thought our $422.00

TrevorsMommy's picture

OUCH! I thought our $422.00 SRP one was bad.

I think it depends upon

lattemom's picture

I think it depends upon other factors, too - like how old your system is and how well insulated your home is. We live in a small house, a 1950's ranch with those wonderful old windows that are horribly insulated. We have a brand new air conditioner and keep the thermostat at 79-80 degrees. Our last bill was $240.

I think my jaw dropped as

MOMieOF2's picture

I think my jaw dropped as well when our APS bill came in yesterday. And I too did the same, with being careful not to wash clothes or have the TV on during peak hours, etc. And we are not even home during the week either, I think that it may have had to do with the week that the sister in law was visiting. But my gosh, makes me wonder what kind of appliances she had running.

Ours is constantly rising as

mamaofone's picture

Ours is constantly rising as well with nothing changing in our routines. We live in about little over 1000 sq. ft. apartment and our bill is usually a little over $100 each month it's been going up about $10 or so. I don't know why though. Our air is always set at 80 or 82. Never below 80. Laundry during peak hours.

i am in the same boat as everyone!! ours went up over $100 from last month! nothing different, higher bill!!!
We do have SRP not APS

Does APS/SRP raise their

carolyns's picture

Does APS/SRP raise their rates in the summer because of increased demand? We just went on the "Equalizer" plan with APS so we pay the same amount ($214) every month (2000 square foot house, about 20 years old, so insulation is probably not great). We signed up back in April when our bill was around $100 - tough to swallow at that time, but last July our bill was over $350 so it was nice to know how much it would be this year!

Our bill this month was

iluvmykids's picture

Our bill this month was $338...over $100 more than last month! We have SRP and it is the first of their 2 month summer peak pricing. Our house is just over 2000 sq. ft.

Also...they raised the rates in April or May that they said would be more evident in the summer months.

I'm crossing my fingers. We

mamalemur's picture

I'm crossing my fingers. We just moved into a new two story 1700 square foot house last month, and have yet to get the APS bill. I'm really hoping it's going to be under $400 - but I'm not sure if we're gonna make it.

Does you bill show the usage

mom2threegrlz's picture

Does you bill show the usage is a lot more than last year? If so, your A/C could be low on freon. I found this out the hard way. We were on the equalizer plan so I wasn't looking at the bills closely. Our house is 30 years old, single pane windows, original A/C unit so the bills are always high. Our equalizer payment started at $225 and jumped to $325 when they adjusted it after the first year. When I actually went online to look at the usage it had jumped considerably. The A/C unit also works the heater & it had a slow leak so we didn't notice it wasn't working as well.

our usage went down from

our usage went down from last year and the bill was more. We have SRP.

Ours in the summer is

tonys_mom's picture

Ours in the summer is usually $300 and winter it is between $100 and $200. We use the dishwasher and washer and dryer at night during there off-peak time and still it costs us a lot. We are always careful about the temp that our air is on and lights in room we aren't in are always off. We have no idea how the bill can get so high.

My brother has SRP and pays A LOT less and he isn't careful with what his air is on. Then his children leave all the lights in the house on. I think we should be able to choose our electric company

My house is 2 stories, 2800

nocgirl's picture

My house is 2 stories, 2800 sq ft, built in 2004 so we have 2 units. Our highest bill in the summer is about $250.00. I am on the off-peak on peak discount though so if you try to use your electricity and A/c off peak hours, iti cheaper. I do not follow it 100% though but try to do things before 1pm or after 8pm. After 8pm I turn the air down. I have my thermostat at 18 during the day and at night we turn it down to 77 or 78. This is comfortable to me but my husband would like it cooler.

Also older houses are not insulated very good. My parents live in an old house, about 1600 sq ft and their bill is never less than 200.00 in the summer.

Just so you guys know I got

Lavender_Sea's picture

Just so you guys know I got a recent letter from SRP saying that the prices were going up. I for the life of me can't remember how much it said, but it's going up. I have found which has helped me, and I'm not sure if you guys are at home mom's or what not, but I keep the Thermostat on 83 during the day, bring it down to about 80 when I get home at 5, and then at night I put it on 79. We have a two story house that unfortunately (had we been thinking when we bought it) has huge ceilings which have tons of trapped air. You may want to re-caulk around the windows and doors, and look underneath the doors to make sure there aren't any gaps which is where air tends to seep out. Also turn off everything before you leave the house, lights, keep a main ceiling fan running, but turn off the ones in the rooms, computers, TV's etc. Also I know it may be pricey but call one of those shade screen companies to put them out on your windows. And do what you are doing, run your dishwasher, and dryer before bed, run a load of laundry before you leave in the early AM (no heat really from the washer). The stove is another big one. If you don't have any ceiling fans you will be suprised how circulating the air helps. Anyway good luck to you all, and may we all be able to pay our electric bills. :-)

phoenixgrlkim1's picture

I'll admit after hearing a couple of your guy's bills I'm going to get on my floor and kiss that our's was only slightly over $200 lol...

I'm a complete Nazi with the a/c in our house. My stays between 78-82 and when it doesn't I get bent lol. I tell my husband and my kids to get in a cool shower to cool off (cause let's face it water bills are WAY cheaper) if they are hot. I also try to cook a one pot slop or outside or not at all in the summer to keep the a/c down and the bill steady.

However, next month's bill will probably send me to my knees asking God to slip an extra $100 into my pocket somehow (last year's July bill was $302). I personally think no matter what you do or don't do both SRP and APS have it in for us poor Arizonians. I'm mean let's face it, they can charge as much as they want and we'll pay because we live in the state where the average degree is incinerator.

Our APS bill this month was

Our APS bill this month was $250, about $80 more than last month. We keep our thermostat set at 82 so I wasn't really thinking it would go up that high. I guess I was wrong:)

We have grid-tied solar and

MrsPeppermint's picture

We have grid-tied solar and our APS bill was still over $400 this month - it was shocking because we have been super careful - off peak usage, changed most of our lights a few months ago... all of that and still - a jaw dropping $400 + bill.
My husband said their bill at work was outrageous compared to last year and that the rates really went up.
I have read recently that APS has been having financial troubles so perhaps this is their way of compensating - but I am just guessing.

Yeah I saw that about APS

tonys_mom's picture

Yeah I saw that about APS having financail problems. In my opinion that is there own fault because they are spending there money wrong so why should we the customer have to suffer. We aren't the ones telling them where to spend the money they make.

Well, I got out APS bill

mamalemur's picture

Well, I got out APS bill this morning. It was $376. Better than I thought it was going to be. We're on the on peak / off peak program, but my boyfriend loves to crank the AC down to 70 when I'm not looking... ARGH! Plus, the AC is a bit undersized for the house, so it's having to work harder. Well, that just means he's not going to get to play golf next month on both days of the weekends :) I'm cutting him down to just Saturdays....

My bill went from $120.00 to

mommyandwife's picture

My bill went from $120.00 to $250.00. Just like everyone else we had not done anything different. We even bought fans so we don't have to run the ac so low, and I don't wash until after 9 on Friday night.

Yeah see that is how we are

tonys_mom's picture

Yeah see that is how we are in our house, we do laundry after 9pm or on weekends and same for the dishwasher. We try to use anything that would take up a good amount of electricity on the off-peak time. None of it seems to help at all though. Then the charges they have listed are rediculous, that is actually where most of the payment goes to I think.

Holy (inappropriate term)!!

Holy (inappropriate term)!! i just saw my SRP bill for next month!! it went up another $100 AGAIN!!!!!!
absolutly nothing different!!!

Our is always in the $300 to

Susie's picture

Our is always in the $300 to $400 range - but we have a pool, which adds to the cost, and we keep the thermostat way down (74-75) because we're whimps. I haven't really noticed a difference between this year and last year.

I've just switched to APS's

soccermom's picture

I've just switched to APS's newer rate plan noon to 7PM all other times and weekends are off peak rates. It has saved me money and allowed me to do the laundry and chores after everyone leaves for school and cool the house down before bedtime. It's changed my lifestyle!

I think APS's recent rate hike has also made everyone's bills a bit higher. And APS is already asking for yet another rate increase. Yikes!
