health insurance and cobra?

divaballerina's picture

So my husbands starting a new job and I guess it might be 90 days of lapse for our health insurance.. We are a family of five.. I called cobra to check on what coverage would be and it is outrageous. It's almost 1,500 a month. Does anyone know of something cheaper? Has any had to deal with this? I am so afraid that if we opt out for the three months then something bad could happen and we would be really in a bind.. Any advice on this?

You can get a short-term

You can get a short-term policy or an individual policy for the 90 days. They both will be a lot cheaper than COBRA. If you are interested I can help you out. I can give you quotes for both. You can contact me at nancy@swansongrp.net.

Thanks

We used short term health

We used short term health insurance. You can go online and do it yourself at ehealthinsurance.com. It only took 48 hours before I got the email approval and the cards came within days. It was very easy to cancel as well and very little paperwork. There were lots of different plans to choose from with different benefits and deductibles. We are a family of 3 and it was about $85 a month. Good LucK!

Apply for AHCCCS! If you are

Apply for AHCCCS! If you are not approved for AHCCCS you may be referred to KidsCare and you would pay a low monthly premium.

I agree. Ahcccs has plans

I agree. Ahcccs has plans they give to families where they pay a premium and I'm positive it will be way less than COBRA. If not your kids may qualify at the least for their insurance and you and your husband can pay for insurance to cover yourselves.

Even if you are willing to

Even if you are willing to take your chances and pay whatever expenses might come up during that 90 days, you should not let the insurance lapse, because you could be refused coverage for any preexisting condition. Unlikely, but if anyone in the family were to receive a new diagnosis during that period of time, that family member could be denied coverage under your husband's new work plan. It's unlikely, but I never expected to wake up one morning a few short months ago, to my 5 yr old son having a seizure!
