At home color?

LaraPiu's picture

I need to cover my gray hair - and a lot of it especially for the ripe old age of 35 - every three weeks. I've found that good hair color is worthwhile, but it's so darn expensive. Any tips out there?

I like Clairol Natural

I like Clairol Natural Instincts. It is almost always on sale or a coupon in the paper. It is semi-permanent, so it grows out in 3 weeks, but I like that it doesn't leave a harsh dye line, so you don't have to dye EXACTLY every 3 weeks or everyone will know, it has a bit more of a grace period. It also doesn't dye so hard, so there is some natural shading.

Do you know anyone who is a licensed professional to buy you products? I have really gray hair, and I also have to color it every three weeks. My friend buys the Redken line for me to use at home, and it's the best I have ever used to cover gray!

I color my hair and she colors the crown and top layer of my hair a slightly darker color than the rest. It matches my natural color more closely and it grows out with grace. I've used this method with great success.

Sometimes, salons will do root touch ups for less than dying your whole head. It's worth asking about...

Also, look for coupons to high end salons. I found one in the paper the other day for $25 off Dolce Salon services. I find a lot in the YES! Magazine w/Friday's Az Republic.

Sally's Beauty supply is less than the traditional retail stores. Also there are often great coupons for hair color in the Sunday paper. Some are even buy one get one free!
