Hilary for president

tink's picture

Anyone keeping up with the slew of presidential candidates?Anyone planning on voting for Hilary Clinton just for girl power? I'm undecided now...but whether you align yourself with Hilary's politics or not, you have to agree her running is a good thing for our girls. My daughter is talking about how she wants to be president.

I would rather cut off my

I would rather cut off my foot than vote for her.
I don't think women should neccessarily support her just because she is a woman and we want to keep little girls dreams of becoming president alive.....if people like her stance on the issues, great, but she does not deserve support just for being female. As for Hilary - I think are more qualified (and less corrupt) candidates out there.
For the most part, women don't care about politics ( I know there are exceptions, but generally speaking this is true)......and they won't research the candidates.......so I have a feeling she'll get a lot of "oh, a woman, good" knee-jerk votes from the ladies.

Why does this not surprise

Why does this not surprise me....

Perhaps you'd care to expand on your position? I'm not sure whom I'm voting for, at this point, but I'm curious to know why someone would rather cut off a limb than vote for an intelligent, accomplished, professional, experienced, analytical women - with all of the power of introspective insight and skillful negotiation at which our gender excells.

Unless, of course, they get their news from FOX or the mental giant - Rush Limbaugh....

Hello Kris....:) No, I am

Hello Kris....:)
No, I am not a fan of Rush, sorry to disappoint you there..
Nor is Fox news my main source of information, political or otherwise.

My issues with Hillary are as follows:

Too polarizing - she has far too many enemies on the far right.

I don't like her health care plan - I favor Barack Obama's
because his is optional while hers is madatory.

She's too close to special interest groups and corporate lobbyists.

Aside from all that, I just don't find her to be genuine.
IMHO, she won't be good for this country.

I am leaning toward Barack Obama at this point.

Yes, Obama's plan is

Optimist's picture

Yes, Obama's plan is mandatory for children, while Clinton's plan is mandatory for all. This is essentially the only difference between the two. It makes no sense to attempt a universal health plan without mandates. Without mandates, the pool of people covered will disproportionately skew toward the sick, as millions of young healthy people will choose to take their chances, as they do now. However, these people are still susceptible to car accidents and appendecitis, etc. and will wind up seeking treatment in the emergency rooms, where they will not be turned away. Faced with a $15K bill, most will simply choose to take the credit hit and not pay it! Any risk pool needs to be spread out and include all people. The options of tax breaks encouraging companies to provide coverage and the options between joining a private insurance company's pool or opting for the government program (similar to medicare) are great, but a universal health care system needs to be universal and that requires mandates. If Obama thinks that mandates are a good idea for children, then why not for all? He simply doesn't want to allienate voters and voters tend to have a knee jerk reaction when told that they HAVE to do something. That's the only reason he has made this distinction despite most expert backing the fully madated plan.

Actually, I think the

Katy1999's picture

Actually, I think the biggest difference between their plans is that Obama's is more likely to pass and become an actuality, Clinton has so many enemies anything she proposes is likely to meet with stiff opposition, out of spite. I feel Obama has a better chance of unifying people.
IMHO, the reason many people don't have health insurance is because they can't afford it, not because they just want to roll the dice and go without it, so if they had an option for affordable coverage the majority would take it. Even so, I think they should not be forced into a plan for themseleves....and I have questions about how either one of these mandatory plans would be enforced....are wages going to be garnished?
One thing is for sure - we need a change - the current administration has been a huge disappointment, and it would be refreshing to have intelligent leadership again.

I guess that's my concern

Optimist's picture

I guess that's my concern too. I'm afraid that Obama will refuse to back out of a campaign promise and will attempt a universal plan without mandating coverage for all, and it will fail. I don't want to see another 4 years go by, with no plan enacted.

My sister has her master's degree, but chooses to coach college basketball for a career. While climbing to division 1 ranks, she chose to take assistant positions, with no benefits. She purchased an HMO plan for $60 per month. There are dozens of plans from which to choose. Sure, she chose a $500 deductible, but it's better then a bill for thousands. I get my health insurance through my company. We pay $160 per month for a family plan for a PPO.

The point is that with broader participation, the risk pool changes and that reduces the costs for everyone. Instead of belonging to a health "group" of company employees only, people will have the option of joining a "group" of the entire country. Heck, some people might even choose to opt out of their "expensive" company plan and join the national one. There is no doubt that a national plan is affordable and doable from a premium point of view. The premiums will be pre tax and most people will wind up with more money from their paychecks when all is said and done. Most people simply don't take the time to calculate the actual cash on hand when the expenses are taken from their checks pre tax. All they see is that they have to pay that $100 per month (or whatever the premiums wind up to be). They will make out BETTER by contributing to a health plan, pre tax, than trying to pay for doctor's or urgent care visits in cash.

The real issues will be how will the plan 1) control costs and 2) pay for the intial start up. Neither candidate has commented on cost controls. Both candidates have mentioned rescinding the tax break that Bush enacted for those making OVER $250,000 per year. That alone, will provide the billions needed for the plan. However, congressional spending rules prohibit enacting an entittlement program without the cash in hand. So, the initial program set up costs will have to come from elsewhere. That will be the task of either candidate - to find those initial funds.

The concern about Hillary's "enemies" is hype. She's well connected too, to accomplish things. And, damn, she's a woman, so we all know that she can think more proactively and resourcfully than a man! LOL.

Either candidate would be okay in my book. It'll never happen, but I'd love to see them BOTH on the ticket!

good

Katy1999's picture

good points..........anything would be an improvement over what we have now.....on my long drive home I always see this billboard ad for an am station with a picture of GWB making a face and the caption "Had Enough?" and I think "yes"............I used to think John McCain was ok but honestly he scares me ....not sure I would want him with his finger on the button..............and I haven't looked at Mike Huckabee that closely.....hopefully someone is going to remove the multitude of "Mitt Romney" signs that are littering the Gilbert/Mesa area now that he has dropped out ....given the options that we could be faced with come election time..... who knows, perhaps I will put my personal feelings aside and you will see me hobbling around Gilbert minus a foot this November. lol
I would not rule out the possiblity of whoever wins the Democratic nomination choosing the other as a running mate......granted, it's a remote possiblity but stranger things have happened.

She's been around a long

lovemy4's picture

She's been around a long time, and I don't know where the corruption idea comes from, but nothing has ever been credible from what I've seen. Fox news is a powerful rumormill however...

I am a woman who follows politics pretty closely, and although I hope no one votes for Hilary just because she is a woman, I hope no one won't vote for her because she is.

I don't like any of the Republican candidates, so if she is the Democratic nominee she'll have my vote.

I'm not going to vote for

tink's picture

I'm not going to vote for Hilary just because she's a girl...but I'm sure she'll get some girl power votes. I know politics isn't a fun thing to invest your time in, but I do hope the moms on this forum do some research and vote. I haven't decided who I'll back, but I know I have to get busy reading the stacks of Time magazine that I saved up to get a better sense of some of these politicos. I do have a friend who's a staunch Republican that hates Hilary and worries about her winning the election, but he hasn't ever explained why except for that she's a Democrat.

My MIL ( 64 ) is a huge feminist. And to our surprise she isn't giving Hilary her vote.Although my MIL is a democrat , as the whole famliy is...so if Hilary is the Democrat running not sure what she will do.
I think it is a honor in it self that we have a women running and I am proud of that...doesn't mean she has my vote though.

Apparently Hillary got

Apparently Hillary got plenty of support yesterday. The more I read about her, the more I like her stands...I do worry though about the political machine. But while Obama sounds great, I worry about his experience. He would need to align himself with a lot of good experts.
