I had a Mirena IUD put in earlier this year.........I had the old kind of IUD previous to that and I had a lot of issues with anemia and heavy bleeding, and the Mirena seems to have resolved that, so in that respect it has been great. The only bothersome side effect was the five pounds or so I put on subsequently, and my monthly cysle has become somewhat irregular.... but I have worked and dieted the annoying five pounds off and I am hoping it won't creep back on. I am wondering if any of you other ladies have the Mirena, and what your long term experiences with it have been. I have read a lot of reviews of this IUD online and stubborn weight gain seems to be a recurring theme.

I know nothing about Mirena,
I know nothing about Mirena, but could your migraines be a side-effect of Mirena?
I thought about that...from
I thought about that...from what I have read, most birth control related migraines are due to estrogen....and the hormone in the Mirena is something different.....they tell you not to use it if you have high blood pressure, and I know headaches can be a by product of that, but my blood pressure is low. I just had it checked this week when I went to the Dr and it was just as low as usual. I had some bloodwork done, they said they would call in a few days with the results if there was something abnormal, and if not they would just send a letter. So far no phone call, so hopefully everything is cool.
I am thinking of having it removed as a last resort just to see what would happen, if I don't identify some other cause and get it under control in the next few months.
I been having the mirena
I been having the mirena since May of 2007! Its been great for me! And now that I read what you posted I realize why I gained 7 pounds! I did not know why i gained so much! I also have irregular periods! But besides that everything is great!
Yeah, that is a known side
Yeah, that is a known side effect - I think it is because it "tricks" your body into thinking it is already pregnant, and the hormones make your appetite increase, so the IUD is indirectly responsible. I notice I have been much hungrier since the insertion, hence the 5 pounds! I just had to crack down on myself.....!
I had a Mirena IUD put in
I had a Mirena IUD put in about a year ago for heavy bleeding due to uterine fibroids. I was not a good candidate for surgery because my uterus is very long and the surgery might have only been 60-70% successful. Aside from some initial cramping and the period brought on by the insertion, I've not had any issues with this IUD. I threw away my scale so I don't know for certain that I've gained any weight. Friends who haven't seen me for awhile say I look healthier and slimmer.
The heavy bleeding I experienced prior to the IUD insertion did make me anemic.I notice that my periods last a little longer than they did, but I can now get through a 3 hour board meeting without leaving to change my protection. My gyn combined this IUD for pre-menopausal treatment and I also take 1 mg. of testosterone 2x a week. That combined with the progesterone in the IUD has me back on track. I feel better than I have in a couple of years.
I have had the Mirena since
I have had the Mirena since May. I have never had an IUD. I think its a good thing. I did at first get irregular periods. I dont count my days ( no reason to...Im not involved with any activities). I have noticed since I had it in place, I get these awful cramps down one side of my leg. It hurts bad. That is the only way I know I am on
my cycle. That has not gone away. I heard it can take up to a year for you to get regular.
I have not experienced any weight gain....it does release hormones so I suppose everyone is different.
Good Luck.
I guess I had a totally
I guess I had a totally different experience. I had it in for 2 years. No noticeable weight gain but I couldn't lose any if I tried. Periods came regularly but very short which was so nice. By the end of the two years they lasted one day. It was awesome! It didn't hurt while it was in but once it was out it felt kind of....just lighter or better in some way.
I've had the Mirena IUD
I've had the Mirena IUD since Jan and I love it. I haven't had a real period, just some spotting, which is great. I haven't noticed any side effects or any weight gain yet.
