Anyone have any info on local 408 carpenters union. Pay, benefits, work available, are there a lot of complanies that hire union guys, any info would be appreciated. My husband is a member if NYC district council now, and we are possibly going to move and this would be the union he would join. Any info would be great

I don't have any info for
I don't have any info for you on the union, but I do work in the construction industry. A word to the wise for your husband (because I know back east unions are a huge plus), have him look at all the options before signing to the union. About 4 years ago we had a drywall subcontractor paying about $3 more an hour for workers and that included benefits, 401K and holiday pay. Make sure he really looks at all the options. I have heard positive and negative things about unions in general, but the most I ever hear is that out here they aren't as necessary to be a part of.

Any chance you could get me
Any chance you could get me in contact with some people so we can get some info on the construction business out there. My husband can pretty much do it all. He has taken down and built bridges, foundations in NJ and NY for big buildings, the rail system at JFK, Work at World Trade Center site, where he had to take track training b/c of train tracks, Currently hes building a control tower at Laguardia. He really can do it all and hes pretty smart too. Yeah the union pay here is great..Over 40 an hr plus amazing benefits such as almost 10 an hr for every hr he works to his annuity, and the union pays an addition $6 something an hr that he receives in a seperate check every 3 months...usually an additional 2K or so..Why give it up? You cant get a decent house close to work under 500K, and that includes needing work, the snow, bare trees, its just uggh after a while..want to try something new...So any info on construction companies would be awesome! thanks
Arizona is a "right-to-work"
Arizona is a "right-to-work" state -- which is doublespeak for "you don't have to join a union, and I can fire you without cause." It's not quite that bad, but you get the point.

I just ran across your
I just ran across your posting. I am a woman in the construction field and have been a union carpenter with local 408 for 18 years. I have rarely been out of work and have managed to raise 4 children by myself on union pay. The pay is probably lower than in New York but the cost of living here is much lower, too. I am currently the Safety Director for the company I work for-- Local 408 is reached by calling 602-484-0444.
yes...we have been in
yes...we have been in contact with them and have met with a company that hires union guys...Its lookin pretty good. The pay is about 1/2 of what it is in NY..Any other info you have would be great. He is very experienced and really knows what he is doing. Hopefully he finds something consistent or a company that likes him and keeps him.
