When do you justify a big purchase?

crisch's picture

Please share why you will splurge on a big ticket item or indulgence...even though your budget is tight and time is precious.

I am not a mom yet, but work in PR and want to hear your thoughts...because when I am pitching a story idea about a certain service or product it isn't always 99cents.

Some women may tell me getting laser hair removal is too expensive and unjustified. Others tell me how wonderful it is to not have to worry about shaving every day and its less razors and cans of shaving cream they don't have to put on the shopping list, too. I personally get brazillian waxes every month...have been doing it for 3 years now and I can tell you that its worth the few moments of pain...because you have less hairgrowth and smooth skin. I decided to try some laser hair removal under my arms and its absolutely fantastic to not worry about lifting my arms in a sleevless top. But, I am aware its not for everyone's budget. But tell me your pros and cons.

ok, another "splurge"...facials and massages. I don't get them a lot, but its a justification at least once every few months for me. I am not getting younger, and I look at my mom who spent years in the sun with a bottle of baby oil slathered on her and know that good sunscreen and skincare will do me good in the long run.

Anyway...i hope to hear some interesting perspectives and ideas from you. Thanks much.

LOL...I thought you meant

LOL...I thought you meant big purchases like new furniture, or something, semi-essential. As a BUSY working mom, wife, employee, sister, friend, Aunt, daughter, etc. I carve out time to color my hair, but that's about it. A massage? facial? waxing? pedicure? ...humm...that would be once a year for Mother's Day! But, I've been told, time and time again, to "take time for" myself. It's probably not best, but I can't justify an hour and a half (plus 30 mins drive time) to indulge myself, when I could be building an Imaginex castle on the floor with my sons, or sifting thought the library together. It's not so much the money (although that too), but time is so packed and stretched for me that I'll settle for the degree of "smooth" legs that I can get in the shower. But, I'm just not in that demographic. Probably only unemployed moms of teens have that kind of time.

I'm with you on that one! I

I'm with you on that one! I got a massage on my honeymoon and a manicure and pedicure for my birthday 3years ago...definitely not in that demographic. Although if I were to have more time, I would go to the gym more. Before I had kids, I was no gym rat, but I went at least a few times a week, and this pregnancy, I'm really feeling my new lack of fitness more.

I've had mornings where I don't have time to shave my legs in the shower and am thankful that it's not quite shorts weather yet. Heck, I haven't gotten a haircut since May (I have long hair, so it's less noticable).

I would love to splurge on beautification procedures, but I can't fit the time into my schedule.

If I were to splurge on durable goods, I would get a flat panel TV for our bedroom, the old CRT is going the way of the dodo next year, and I'd rather not coddle it along with some crummy set top box.

Regular pedicures are a

katfish55's picture

Regular pedicures are a must, so I guess for me that's not a splurge...especially now at 7 months pregnant, I can't reach my toes.... :)

I am REALLY bad about getting my hair colored.... I have the longest roots ever, and people think it's because I'm preggo, which isn't the case, as my doctor said to go for it. It's the 100 bucks or so to get it colored and the two hours....I just hate it.....BUT, with that, I feel it's just a pain in the neck, so again, not a splurge.

I guess for me, it's just buying something for myself that is not needed...some big ticket item that I don't "need". Right now, that would be me going back and forth on buying a Petunia Picklebottom diaper bag... :)

I don't like throwing my

sdebralh's picture

I don't like throwing my money away now that I've gotten in my 30's.
In my 20's, I may have spent more on pampering myself.
Now, I like to use any extra money for my gatherings with my husband and 16 month old son.
I think its a waste to spend 30.00 on a manicure, or go spend 5.00 on a car wash when I can do it myself.
Its just how I was raised. We were born tough in Texas and we do it ourself if it needs to get done.
Now, if a student comes to my door selling products for school, then I don't mind at all spending the money for a great cause. I will spend more often to help a child then to go out and spend money on something unnecessary.

I don't think there is

Katy1999's picture

I don't think there is neccessarily anything wrong in taking some time for yourself.....though I find it a challenge to do myself......I go quite a while between hair appts.....I do get my nails done regularly and get a pedicure every now and then, but my nail place is right across the street from my workplace....so that doesn't count as time away from my family. I do it because I like how it looks.
In general - I justify a big purchase by ensuring that all other bills are paid ( and we have paid ourselves by saving) before indulging in electronics, etc......we don't carry credit card debt, so if we have the money and we want something, then why not...different people have different priorities for their disposeable income.......so what is frivolous and stupid to one is not to another.
I think it would be nice to be "hair free" in certain areas....but it's not such a priority to me that I'd invest the time or money in laser hair removal......but if some other woman sees value in it, and she's got the time and the extra cash.....who am I to criticize or throw a guilt trip on them?

I hardly ever go to the spa

phxgrocerydeals's picture

I hardly ever go to the spa anymore - but I used to a lot before I had my baby (and also became a stay-at-home mom). I only get my hair cut every couple of months, and I'm now a proud customer of Great Clips instead of an expensive salon. My "splurge" would probably be a pedicure every month or so, but only if I have a coupon.

I think for my birthday I might go the spa for a day (for a massage), but otherwise I rarely spend money on myself. I guess once or twice a year would be it for me.
