I'm So Disappointed and a little peeved

azpond's picture

I was just at Paradise Valley Mall and wanted to check out the new store called Papaya. I liked what I saw and the prices are great. HOWEVER, when I asked the employee to see if they had a size XL in the back she stated that they only carry sizes up to Large. I think that sucks!

It's happened to me before when I was shopping at Express. I've never been back even though I've lost weight and could wear a large. Am I being sensitive or are stores being prejudice and just plain stupid?

I wonder if the store

flyerg's picture

I wonder if the store doesn't carry a size XL or the clothing line isn't made for sizes above XL? If the store doesn't stock the bigger sizes I think the are both prejudice and dumb. But if the clothing line is specific toward the slimmer set - well, what can you do?

Speaking as one who wears the XL, I am conflicted on this. I can see the point of view of the designer who may feel his line wouldn't look good on bigger women. That's my realistic side speaking. Then my emotional side screams, "unfair!".

It reminds me of the scene in the movie Hairspray when the pleasantly plump Tracy is wanted for the spokesgirl of Pinky's Hefty Hideaway.

sure, fine, whatever

I worked at Dillards and

darla's picture

I worked at Dillards and usually when new clothes were in they had certain sizes for the type of people or how certain people dress. A example would be like Roca Wear they had only a couple large and up sizes because it was suppose to be worn big and for hurley they had small sizes etc to fit tight.
I don't think a large person looks right in hurley it would like as if they are wearing kids clothes. Im not putting down anybody but I wouldn't wear Hurley clothes. (My arms and shoulders are not small)

Designers make clothing for

me's picture

Designers make clothing for the people they want to see in their clothes. For instance a size 10 in DKNY will probably run smaller than a size 10 in Ralph Lauren or Liz Claiborne. I would think this is the same for the store Papaya.

I've never heard of it and personally, would just brush it off as their loss.

I just don't see a big jump

azpond's picture

I just don't see a big jump from large to XL in women's clothes anyway. The store has all types of styles. Why not carry the size and make more money. I am tall and tend to need XL to cover my torso the way I like. It really doesn't have anything to do with weight. It has to do with good business sense and customer service in my opinion.

I agree with you when you

I agree with you when you say it makes good business sense and good customer service. You can always contact them and let them know why you are disappointed. You never know, maybe you will make a difference in what sizes they carry.

I just went to their website

azpond's picture

I just went to their website and looks like they "focus primarily in the junior and petite apparel markets." This is what the salesperson should have told me. Guess I'll take my business elsewhere.

I'm not sure why you would

Katy1999's picture

I'm not sure why you would feel discriminated against - the store caters to smaller people, just like other stores cater to a different clientele. I don't feel discriminated against because stores like Torrid and Lane Bryant don't carry size 2. I see things in size XL everywhere, so there are plenty of other places for you to shop. I'm not trying to come down on you, i just don't understand it when people expect everything to be all-inclusive. Some things just aren't.

I'm not used to going into a

azpond's picture

I'm not used to going into a store and not finding a size XL. Of course since it is a new store I didn't know they had a specific niche they were catering too. I don't expect everything to be all inclusive. I do hope for good customer service and a well trained sales staff where I shop.

That's so bogus. I wear L or

Ms.M's picture

That's so bogus. I wear L or XL shirts all the time, and I am by no means fat. They make alot of these shirts small!! More than half of the time the shirt isn't even long enough to touch the top of your pants, or it shrinks the first time you wash it and it's worthless. The numbers/sizes aren't even standard across brands and dont' mean anything. If they don't carry XL they must not want to sell shirts too badly.

I guess I see it differently

Katy1999's picture

I guess I see it differently ....I seem to find tons of size XL everywhere, when I am looking for XS...... so I don't see what the big deal is or why it's so heinous or bogus that this one store is catering to the more petite crowd. I think there are more places that target the larger, taller crowd than there are for women my size.....I am 5 ft 3 and I find so many things that are waaaaaayyy too long or too big, and I'm tickled pink on the rare occasion that I find a store that carries pants in a "short" length or tops and dresses in an XS, and even at that it seems like they stock more items in the bigger sizes and the small ones sell out quickly.

I hear you! I once tried to

I hear you! I once tried to get a swim suit at Old Navy and was told I wasn't their demographic. I have not been their demographic since for anything.
