I recently had the same concern with my machine. Come to find out it was mold. You could try scrubbing it with a bleach solution on a regular basis but I was told to replace the rubber piece. Whatever brand you have give the local repair shop a call to see how much the part installed would be. Mine installed was less than $100. Good luck.
I've had a repair person
I've had a repair person tell me the best way to treat this is:
1. Run an empty load on white setting;
2. Add 4 to 5 cups of bleach
Run a couple other empty loads after this with no soap or additional bleach.
This worked well for me. Good luck
