Swingset advice needed!

SavannahJane's picture

We are in the process of fixing up our backyard to make it more "kid friendly" -- namely with a grassy area and a swingset. I was wondering/hoping that someone would have advice about what they've had work best in Phoenix (my kids are 1 and 3). Also, wondering if we should have it installed on the grass, put into a sand pit, or use rubber mulch? Thanks in advance!

We have ours over the grass.

We have ours over the grass. I worry sand would attract all the neighborhood cats as a litterbox.

The grass does get worn down at certain times in the year, but rebounds. Does rubber mulch stay cool??? That always seems like it would be great, but more maintenance than grass.

Good luck!

We have something called rubberifick under our play area. It is recycled, colored, shredded rubber. If you have been to the play area in California Adventures at Disneyland (the wilderness area play area) the part where they have a zip swing - that is what I am talking about. They have it in tans and we have it in greens. I didn't want bark because of bugs, splinters and just plain yuck. I didn't want sand because of cats, and it being tracked into the house. The weeds don't grow in it either.

So you like it Karilou? Is there any maintenance? Did you just have to dig a ditch first and then fill it with this stuff? Where did you get it? Thanks, that is the first part of my 20 question series lol!

First, thanks for the responses. Second, I think you can buy the shredded stuff, no maintenance needed for 10 years (they say) at Home Depot or Loewe's. My question to add to lovemy4's is does it get hot in the summer...? Thanks!
