Ok, I am need of advise for our family pet. We have a 1 1/2 year old dog. She is a great pet and addition to our family, however we just had a sprinkler system installed in our back yard. She has been digging and chewing on the sprinkler heads. Does anyone have any advise as to what we can do to keep her from chewing on these or digging them up?

Try not letting your dog out

Try not letting your dog out alone for awhile. Stay out to suppervise. Everytime you see your dog go for the sprinkler or to dig, give a firm correction (NO!) and give an acceptable toy. Keep doing this till she gets it. I know this is a lot of work, but she'll get it if you are consistant and firm.

I once had a wolf hybrid,

Hollyanneu2's picture

I once had a wolf hybrid, Ice, that loved ripping the sprinklers off just so he can get 25 ft water sprouts going to play in...drove me insane.

My male roommate at that time buried Ice's stools in the soil around the sprinklers...Next thing I know, he stopped ripping, no more embarrassing trips to Home Depot, and my next month's water bill dropped....

Don't know if this would work with your dog...good luck!

Ahh, Sounds like something we should try! I did notice that she goes around where are the sprinkler heads are and urinates by each one EVERY time.

Thanks for the suggestion!!!

If your dog has any other

If your dog has any other issues you would like corrected I would look into barkbusters. It is kind of expensive but they will come out and help you for the life of your pet any time you have problems. They helped us put some order back in our house.

Thank you, I will look this

I did a little research

I did a little research after reading about your situation and found that a spray sold at petsmart may help with the chewing. It leaves a bad taste in the dogs mouth and is completely harmless to them. Its called Grannick's Bitter Apple Spray. Good luck and hope the chewing stops for you!

Wow, thanks! At this point I

Wow, thanks! At this point I am willing to try anything. I don't want to have her caged up or chained all day. Thank you!

I know petsmart has a spray

I know petsmart has a spray you can use to keep there mouth off of things..can use it on furniture legs and such to. It is bad tasting or spicy (not sure which) and makes them not want to put it in there mouth.

The bitter apple spray does

The bitter apple spray does work - I have used it myself. But if you spray that stuff on the sprinkler heads and then when they go off, boom, you've got bitter apple all over your yard. I would go to Petco or Petsmart and get one of those huge bones - not the rawhide - but the actual cow bones. I gave one to my dog months ago and he still gnaws on it.

sure, fine, whatever
