Prices in Grocery Stores

Is it just me or are prices in local grocery stores going up? I've been noticing the increases for a while now.

Two weeks ago the tomatoes we usually buy were up to $3.99 a pound, from $2.99 a pound. I mentioned this to my husband and he says it's probably because these are items not in season and are coming from out of the country. Well today i noticed the same tomatoes were up to $4.99 a pound, but with the savings of the "grocery discount card" (i will be nice and not mention the store name) the tomatoes were $3.99 a pound.

So, i thought ok...maybe it's the season and importing and all that. Well, i headed over to the juice aisle and the V8 drinks have also gonna up in price.

Whats going on?

Anyone have any ideas where to get veggies for less. I'm gonna be honest i am not a coupon cutter, but i do enjoy a good deal and saving money.

It isn't just you - the

It isn't just you - the price of groceries has gone up lately, from meat to produce and everything in between. I was in the grocery buying eggs the other day, and I was suprised to see they were over $2 a carton.....and this was the "discounted" club card price, with the actual price being over $3.....!!!!! My best guess is this all has to do with rising fuel costs.
For produce - I usually get the best deals at Sprouts. I used to love Henry's but they closed down......I saw that a Whole Foods just opened up close to where my son practices basketball....I am going to check out their selection later this week.

I have also heard that

I have also heard that Sprouts has great deals on produce - I don't really live near one so I've never shopped there before. I'm also annoyed by the price of groceries, especially milk -it's getting hard to find a gallon for less than $3!

No, I do believe grocery prices have gone up quite a bit. Just a couple of years ago, I averaged about $80/week to feed a family of three. Now I'm lucky to get out of the grocery store spending under $120.

Sprouts does have pretty good prices on produce. The only thing I would caution you about is the freshness. The produce I get at the grocery store always stays fresh longer than what I get at Sprouts, so if you shop at Sprouts, plan on using your produce more quickly.

I've also heard they have pretty good prices at Fresh and Easy, though haven't checked it out myself. Whole Foods usually costs more than the grocery store.

You know, it is funny that

You know, it is funny that you mention that because a Fresh & Easy just opened in my neighborhood.....and I was intrigued so my son and I checked it out on our way home yesterday. We liked what we saw. I noticed that the prices were a bit lower than the local Safeway I usually shop at. It's a small store, so i definitely could not do all my shopping there, but I think the next time I need to grab a few things for dinner, I am going to give it a whirl. i have beeb trying to cook at home more - we eat out a lot.
I was delighted to find that they had a few Indian items I don't find at other local stores....they had naan in the bread aisle....so we picked some up...and they have ready made entrees and they carried several Indian dishes....I am looking forward to trying them out. My husband hates Indian food but I love it so perhaps for lunch on one of my work from home days.

I know exactly what you

I know exactly what you mean....I noticed this a few months ago. But we save money with a vegetable co op. I use http://www.bountifulbaskets.org/ and love it. We get two baskets every two weeks for my family size. We get alot of fresh veggies and fruits. You can also order whole grain bread, which is really good, for $2 each loaf. Throughout the year, they have specials. Like for Valentines Day you could have ordered See's candies for a great price. You order every other Wednesday and then pick up the following Saturday at a specific location close to where you live.
The items we don't use, I give to family and friends. You don't always know what you will get, but it is always items we use. Give it a try!!
Sprouts also has really fresh produce and great prices too. I go there alot as well.
