We've got tips for finding a camp and suggestions for questions to ask, as well as some resources.

Tips

These tips for finding summer camp also apply to other intersession camps:

• Don't just choose a program because your friend liked it. Each family's needs vary, so check into each program's type, size, cost, location, and philosophy.

• Consider what do you and your child want to gain from the camp experience. Is it developing new skills, independence or confidence?

• Look into the child-to-staff ratio and consider how your child interacts in small and large groups. Some larger camps break into smaller groups.

• Ask your child if he or she has any special interests, such as music, art, science or sports.

• Think about how the program fits your child. Will there be a lot of structure? Social interaction? Physical activity? Can your child work at his or her own pace? Are there intellectual requirements?

• Jot down any concerns and ask about them when you talk to the program director or tour the program.

• Next year, start looking for camps once school starts to ensure you don't end up on a waiting list.

When interviewing daycares or camps, ask these questions:

• Are they licensed? (Ask to see it or check it against state records)

• What's the cost and are there extra fees.

• What's the staff-to-child ration?

• What kind of experience/credentials do the teachers/staff have?

• Do they do criminal or other background checks on employees?

• What's the staff turnover like?

• Do caretakers know CPR?

• Have any kids been seriously injured? And how did the center handle it?

• When kids misbehave, how is that handled?

• Can you drop in at anytime?

• Are snacks or meals provided?

When you observe the daycare or program, watch for nourishing meals, a variety of activities, a clean environment, patient caregivers, respect for parents and a sense of safety.

If you need helping finding a place, the Arizona Department of Health Services' licensing division has a database of child care providers at www.azdhs.gov/als/databases/providers_cc.pdf.
